Robert L. Barnes was born on the Eastern Shore of Virginia May 14, 1937.

During his childhood Robert spent many hours drawing the ships and the aircraft that were being used in the war effort. He loved to draw but was always frustrated because he wanted his drawings to look more realistic.

He graduated from Hargrave Military Academy in 1957 and that same year he joined the US Air Force where he spent the next five years. During this time he was trained as a SCUBA diver.

Upon his discharge, he sought work as a commercial diver but was told his military training was not suitable for a career as a civilian diver.

In pursuit of a diving career he enrolled in The Coastal School of Deep Sea Diving in Oakland, California. After graduating he worked in that field until 1982.

In his lifetime Robert has logged more than 15,000 hours working as a commercial diver. His jobs in this field have included construction, salvage and the field of oceanographic research.

Qualifying for a pilots license he has more than 4,500 hours as a pilot. He has flown over 50 different types of aircraft including many of the WWII aircraft he sketched as a young boy.

As a professional artist he has created over 1,200 paintings using water colors to depict his views of life on the Eastern Shore. Many of his works have been published as signed and number, limited edition lithographs. "I have never had a large bank account and there have been times when I wondered where the next meal was coming from, but I have never been bored. I have always enjoyed what I am doing and have always looked forward to Monday mornings."
