Baby Updates March 5, 2000
Febrary 29th Met with Doc today after another long wait of course! My appointment was at 4:30, and I didn’t even get called back until about 5:40PM! Back was hurting and ankles swelling as I looked through magazine after magazine. In the past two weeks I have gained 8 pounds!! Although I can attribute much of it to fluid, that is still the biggest jump I’ve ever had. Before it was just 1-2 pounds a week. So after 32 weeks I’ve gained 35 pounds. Next appointment is March 8th. Blood pressure was a little bit higher than last time, but nothing major. He listened to heart beats and measured my belly. He wanted to know when I was going to stop working. I said I now wanted to try to work through the 17th. Evil eyes from him!! This coming week is my student teacher’s last week. Her last day is on the 10th, so I will continue to have her help. The following week is a 4 day teaching week due to an inservice day on the 17th. My plan is to teach everything myself on the 13th and 14th, see if my sub can shadow me on 15th and 16th, and then sit on my behind at the inservice on the 17th. Then she can fully take over on the following Monday. Doc says if we are still here in 4 weeks discussing everything, we’ll wonder why we’ve been so lucky! Is that a warning? A prediction? If I quit on the 17th, that would be 34 weeks. That still gives me an anticipated 2 weeks at home before 36 weeks, which is one month early if I were to have the babies then. Sounds reasonable to me. Or am I pushing my luck? We discussed the position of the babies and the different possibilities of how they could be delivered. Nothing really can be determined until I go into labor, at which time they will check the position of the breech baby. It all depends on whether she is feet first, butt first, or transversal (tilted sideways). My feeling is that if they really believe the second baby will have to be delivered by C-section, then I want BOTH delivered that way. Why should the babies or myself go through the trauma or pain of delivery? Yes, yes, I know I will have other pain later to deal with but. . . Of course, I’d be glad to hear about any positive or negative experiences with C-sections if anyone out there wants to share.
March 4, 2000 I had to go to the hospital today to have a fetal non-stress test. I had to recline on a bed in one of the delivery rooms with three belts strapped around my belly. There were sensors on each belt. One for me, one for Baby A, and one for Baby B. It showed their heart rates, and I was supposed to click a button every time I felt movement at all, no matter what side it was on. There was supposed to be cycles of high and low heart rates, which they did see, and also a correlation between higher heart rates and when I felt movement. Joe went with me. We were both surprised at how much the heart rates fluctuated. They might be in the mid 130’s for a few minutes, and then climb to 180 bpm, and back down again. I had to have the monitor on for 30 minutes. The monitor is also supposed to show my contractions, which I didn’t have any of course. They said everything looked fine. I have to go again next Saturday morning.
