Baby Updates March 8-11, 2000
March 8, 2000 I had an appointment this afternoon with the doctor. Sort of! My appointment was scheduled for 4:30PM. I sat in the waiting room again until 5:30, and then was taken back for the usual nurse stuff. I then waited some more, until 5:55! I had to be at a breastfeeding class at 6:00PM! Needless to say, I was a little upset. That was the quickest checkup I’ve ever had. He measured my belly, listened to the heartbeats, and apologized as I flew out the door. There were only 3 other women at the breastfeeding class. We watched a video first, and then the nurse went back over all of the information again, answering questions and offering advice. I am convinced that breastfeeding is the best way to go because of all of the health benefits, but it sounded challenging with ONE baby, let alone TWO! ***Once again, any advice out there would be appreciated!!*** It also sounds more efficient and cheaper in the long run to buy a good hospital-quality breast pump from the local drug store than use those manual hand pumps. It sounds as though the cheaper pumps don’t last as long. The nurse said you could spend $125 or more a month on formula, so $200 + for a good breast pump sounds reasonable.
March 9, 2000 Joe and I attended the first session of the childbirth class tonight. I really enjoyed the first part, because the nurse went over in detail all of the changes that were happening to our bodies (sympathetically) which I hope made Joe appreciate more all of the discomfort I am going through. We watched a video showing (EVERYTHING) during two different labors and births. Sitting in the dark, I had tears in my eyes after watching the first one. Just thinking about going through all of that was really moving (and scary!) for me. It was pretty amazing. So on the way home, I asked Joe how he felt about seeing the labor and birth. I know what you’re thinking. WHY WOULD YOU EVEN THINK HE WOULD REPLY WITH SOME MEANINGFUL, SENSITIVE RESPONSE? I don’t know. I sat there several seconds, waiting for his emotional, profound response. And he says in typical guy fashion, “They COULD have used better looking women in the film!” AAAGGGGGHHHHH!!!!!! That’s my husband. What a guy! Of course, you have to understand that he KNEW that would piss me off. He loves yanking my chain.
March 10, 2000 Today was the last day for my student teacher. I gave her a glowing report and an A for her grade. The kids wanted to have a surprise party for her, so we snuck around behind her back and parents brought in cake, ice cream, and pop. Little did I know that I was scammed also! The cake was half decorated for me as well. I got a cute booklet made by the students with little notes for me. Very touching! I’m going to hate leaving them to someone else!
March 11, 2000 Went to the hospital for a fetal non-stress monitor again like last Saturday. Everything is looking good. Same thing again next weekend.
