Generally thought
of as the quietest of the outspoken Spice Girls, particularly before Ginger Spice -- the
brazen Geri Halliwell -- left the group in early 1999, Melanie C enlisted the aid of some
of the heaviest hitters in the music industry to ensure a successful, aggressive debut. Producer Rick Rubin (Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers), Bryan Adams, two members of Beck's band, Rhett Lawrence (writer and producer for Mariah Carey) and TLC's Lisa Left Eye all contributed to Northern Star. Citing bands like Blur, Oasis, Hole and Garbage as some of her influences, Melanie is hoping to move away from her commercial pop past and appeal to a more "indie" crowd with her new sound. But a solo career does not mean the end of the Spice Girls. They are currently recording their third album, and will go on tour in late 1999. The Spice Girls are evolving just as Melanie is going out on her own. "When Spice Girls started we were still all really young," says Melanie, "in five years you change a hell of a lot, and that's what Northern Star represents." Gabrielle Schafer |
