New Radicals
founder Gregg Alexander has an obsession with pop culture. Convinced that the music
business has been corrupted by "corporate America" and overzealous pop rockers
that hide behind their images, Alexander uses cynicism and a razor-sharp sense of reality
to cut through the facade.
Born and raised in Grosse Pointe, Mich., Alexander began experimenting with music in high
school with a guitar and a four-track recording system. After high school, he headed off
to Los Angeles on a fruitless search for a record deal. From there he embarked on an
extended road trip of the United States and Europe, eventually settling in New York, where
he further developed his music by busking in Central Park.
With musicians he'd met on his
travels, Alexander formed the New Radicals and began compiling material for the somewhat
revolving-member outfit's debut LP, Maybe You've Been Brainwashed Too. Alexander inked a
contract with MCA Records who released the album in 1998. The first single, "You Get
What You Give," became a hit on both radio and MTV.
