Himura Shinta lost his parents to cholera, and ended up with some slave traders. One night, they were attacked by some bandits, and Himura's friends (who had become his new family), Akane, Sakura, and Kasumi died trying to protect Shinta. Before the bandits killed him as well, Himura was saved by a man named Hiko Seijorou, who told him to go to town, tell them of what has happened, and to try to live out the rest of his life as a normal person; Hiko then left. After a while, Hiko returned to find that this small child had buried all of the dead, and recognizing a kindred spirit within the boy, he took him on as his pupil, and named him Kenshin, saying that Shinta was too nice a name for a swordsman.
