The highly reclusive mist dragons are a rarity on Krynn. Once
true dragons, these wyrms were altered by the chaotic magic of the
Graygem during the Age of Dreams. Although much like real dragons, mist
dragons are perpetually enveloped in thick fog. This haze emanates to
about one hundred feet from the serpent, effectively camouflaging it as a
low cloud bank. The dragons themselves are grayish-white in color, and
rarely reach beyond one hundred feet in length.
Though fearsome, mist dragons do not emit the awesome terror
wrought by dragonawe. However, these beasts still retain dragon breath,
in the form of a whirlwind of misty, frigid air. Mist dragons are
generally thought to control the school of aeromancy and the sphere of
spiritualism. Another power given to them by the Graygem is the ability
to become as intangible as air. At a moment's notice, a mist dragon can
become the fog that surrounds it, evading any physical attack and flowing
through openings too small for its bulky serpentine form. These wyrms
occasionally summon air elementals and ghosts to do their bidding.
Long ago, the modest population fo mist dragons left Ansalon,
fearing prosecution and attack from both their chromatic and metallic
cousins. For thousands of years they lived in relative peace on the
Misty Isle east of Ansalon, until Malystryx the Red razed their island.
Only a handful of mist dragons survived the assault, returning
reluctantly to Ansalon. Although apprehensive, a lingering sense of
revenge burns in each of their souls, set alight by the cruel flames of
the Red Marauder.
The Survivors—Avengers of the Mist
Only six dragons were able to escape from the wrath of Malys'
savage attack. These individuals now have only two major
objectives—staying alive long enough to procreate and restore their clan,
and, perhap just as important, making the Red pay for her impudence.
Though solitary by nature, these wyrms have banded together to plot the
downfall of the most powerful Dragon Overlord on Krynn.
The largest mist dragon that lived through the ordeal was a
female named Foggdilantas(mist dragon female wyrm, inspiring demeanor).
Once matriarch of the island, Fog now finds herself leading the
dispirited survivors of her clan into exile. Fog hates Malys from the
depths of her heart and would like nothing more than to see her suffer as
her siblings and progeny did, but realizes that keeping her race alive
must be the first order of business. This wise dragon only hopes that
somehow her clan will survive, and is willing to fight to the death in
order to save them. Even now, looking towards the smoking wasteland of
eastern Ansalon, she grows more and more worried that this will become a
necessary circumstance.
Before the destruction of Misty Isle, the serpent known as
Smoke(mature adult male mist dragon, uncaring demeanor) was probably the
most solitary of the very inconspicuous mist dragons. He cared about
little else than the small, comfy world inside his secluded cave. This
perfect reality was torn asunder by the coming of the Red Marauder. When
the bloody massacre finally ended, Esmoakannar limped from his lair to
find the mauled remains of his fellows strewn about the island, their
very spirits drained from their bodies. When great Fog came to him,
commanding him to accompany the surviving mist dragons to Ansalon, aloof
Smoke had no choice but to obey. Although he has no desire to hunt down
Malystryx, he knows he can never go back to his quiet life again.
As daughter to Foggdilantas, Vapor(young adult female mist
dragon, heedless demeanor) was filled with monumental fury when the Red
flew over their realm, wreaking havoc and leaving her home in ruins.
Wovaprus was prepared to follow and hunt down the red, but for Fog's
stern reprimand. Still, this female feels that the survivors should
inflict merciless vengeance upon their foe. What angers Vapor even more
is that Malys didn't even consider the mist dragons a threat. She can't
comprehend that her home, kin, and former life were completely destroyed
for the simple reason of being at that wrong place at the wrong time.
Ancient and bitter Steam(old male mist dragon, cynical demeanor)
was once a figure of amusement to the former inhabitants of Misty Isle.
Though utterly terrified by the power wielded by the queen of dragons,
Stemantradox was one of the few dragons who attacked Malystryx head-on.
He is unique due to the fact that he survived the attempt. Which is not
to say he escaped unscathed; one of his horns was shattered, and due to a
wing injury, he cannot fly for extended periods. Steam does not
understand why he is alive, and knows it would be much simpler if he
wasn't. Nevertheless, this lame, wily dragon wishes another chance to
fight Malys before he enters the afterlife.
Lohazavon(mature adult female mist dragon, pessimistic demeanor)
was once a brave and noble wyrm, among the more powerful of the dragons
that lived on Misty Isle. In spite of this fact, when the Red Dragon's
fiery breath washed over the island, Haze felt pure terror for the first
time. The same dragonawe that afflicted the kender of Balifor reduced
this female to fleeing the crimson menace. This brief meeting now gives
Lohazavon serious doubts of her abilities and those of her fellow
survivors. She considers hunting down Malys insane, tantamount to
suicide; any being attempting to attack her—save a god—is doomed.
Those who knew Nimbus(juvenile female mist dragon, timid
demeanor) before the attack on Misty Isle would never recognize her now.
This young mist dragon was a very sociable and blithe female who was
curious about anything and everything. Regardless, like Smoke, Malys's
invasion exposed Nimbsodomyr to the harsh realities of life and death.
Forced to watch as her family and friends disintegrated under a barrage
of dragon breath, she is now a quiet and nervous serpent. Horrible dreams
of hellish flames and toothy jaws haunt this dragon every time she
relaxes her mental guard, day or night. She is contantly looking over her
shoulders, fearful of a red, winged shadow, coming to claim the life of
one who escape her wrath.
These mist dragons, the last of their race, currently roost on a
mountain north of The Desolation, called Cloudy Peak by the native
kender. This mountain always seems to be shrouded in thick fog, providing
the perfect environment for them. It also aids the dragons by sceening
their efforts to spy on their most hated enemy.
In 10s.c., Foggdilantas ventured to the Misty Isle of the Dragon
Isles chain, seeking to gain allies in her planned attack on Malys's
lair. Though momentarily surprised at the appearance of their supposedly
mythical kin, the metallic dragons politely refused, protesting that they
wished to be aloof from the affairs of Ansalon. Angered and disgusted,
Fog left Haze, Smoke, and Nimbus in Aurialastican to ensure that their
clan would be preserved, then made for The Desolation. She attempted to
leave Vapor behind also, but the younger dragon stubbornly refused,
beleiving she had every right to partake in the revenge. The three
remaining dragons are plotting even now, always watching from Cloudy
Peak, right under Malys's nose.
Special Abilities
Mist: As mist dragons emit a thick fog, anything besides a
mist dragon within one hundred feet of these wyrms during
combat must acheive a challenging Perception action every minute or
become so dioriented it forfeits its next turn.
Immaterialize: The mist dragon becomes incorporeal, evading a
physical attack against it, though not sorcery or
mysticism. The dragon may remain immune in this way for up to tem
minutes.
Camouflage: Mist dragons gain the benefits of the camouflage
ability, with one exception: if a character has
encountered a mist dragon before, he must accomplish a
challenging Reason action to determine whether he
recognizes the strange mist as a dragon, in which case the camouflage
ability becomes void. Every time he encounters a mist
dragon, this action becomes one degree easier.
