Katzenbach Roman Well

Donnersberg County, Rheinland Palatinate

(NW of Rockenhausen)

In the village of Katzenbach, follow signs for "Roemische Gutshof"; south of the village on a steep slope of the Eisenhut Hill. The actual stone well head and pools is located on the grounds of the Nordpfaelzischen Heimatmuseum (North Palatinate Local History Museum) in Rockenhausen.

In 1910 a Roman well was uncovered. The well complex consists of a semicircular heading with the water opening flanked by two dolphins above an urn carved in relief, and two rectangular basins. In the vicinity, 10 coins minted during the period 341-346 were found.

The well complex is somewhat to the east and lower than the remains of a farm/villa complex which included a bath complex. The site can be visited, and the views from it are splendid.
