OTHER INSTRUMENTS

QUENA: This endblown diatonic flute has seven holes. Native to South America, the quena is made from bamboo. Its range is two full octaves. Earlier models were made from clay and bones and were pentatonic.

BOMBO:Large South American percussion drum. It is made from a hollowed out tree trunk with animal skin streched across both ends.

RAINSTICK: The rainstick known as "palo de agua" is made from a cactus from Northern Chile. The thorns of the cactus are removed and stuck back right into the hollow shaft of the cactus in a spiral pattern.. Small pebbles or lentils are placed inside and covered at both ends. By gently tilting the stick, the pebbles create a pleasant sound as they bounce off the thorns as they make their way down. Used by the Diaguita peoples of the Chilean desert .

TRUTRUCA: From the Mapuche Nation comes this long strait horn. Some measuring just over 2 meters, the trutruca, with no valves creates a fundamental note and its harmonics. The pitch is altered by increasing or decreasing the intensity of air blown into it.

CHAJCHAS: Chajchas or "chullus" in Bolivia are goat or pig hooves tied together producing a sound when they are shaken.

Other instruments such as the guitar, harp and violin were brought from Europe to South America and are popular in Andean Music.
