THE BRIDE WORE BLACK wasn't, unfortunately, the announced "new 35MM print"...it was definitely 35MM but far from pristine. The projection also had issues, very rare at the Castro — image slid out of focus on numerous occasions, and there was some kind of reel-change glitch that led to about ten seconds of black screen late in the film.
I hadn’t seen this before and probably the only reason I wasn’t disappointed was that, having heard mixed things about it, I didn’t have particularly high expectations going in. Some nice touches but an oddly slack narrative, I felt.
The one time I’d seen OBSESSION projected was, as I recall, a fairly faded 35MM print so this DCP presentation was a distinct pleasure if not quite a revelation. Still not near the top of my favorites of De Palma’s but some wonderful moments. And if this is far from Lithgow’s most nuanced characterization, it’s an awful lot of fun.
Noticed one odd anomaly in the presentation: a scene late in the film (when Robertson's on the dock with the empty suitcase, I believe) the top 20% or so of the image was momentarily smeary and blurred; his face was not even recognizable for a second. Have no idea if that was from the projection or the source; it lasted only a few seconds.
