This is an online book of Christian mysticism. It’s very detailed and esoteric. I haven’t have the time to really go through it all, so I can’t tell you specifically what it’s about, but it seems very well researched.

The Pagan Month of January
can be found in its entirety Here. For more detailed entries, please visit the full calendar. In our modern calendar, January marks the beginning of a New Year with new possibilities. Its guardian, the Roman god Janus, is the two faced divinity of endings and beginnings. He is the male equivalent of a version of Juno in her two faced aspect of Antevorta who looks forward and Postvorta who looks back.

January is Eanáir or am Faoilleach, the 'wolf month', in Ireland, two weeks before the festival of 'La Feile Bride'

The first Full Moon between Yule and the 25th of January is called the Disting Moon.

The first day of the first moon is the Chinese and Vietnamese New Year called Tet Nguyen-Dan in Vietnam.

The seventh day of the first moon is Nanakusa, Festival of the Seven Grasses, in Japan. Young herbs are traditionally powdered into stew.

The 14th through the 19th day of the first moon is the Tibetan Butter Festival, the climax of the New Year celebrations featuring large-scale sculptures made from butter.

The 15th day of the first moon is the Feast of Lanterns in China, the culmination of the New Year's festivals.

The First Monday of January is called Handsel Monday in Scotland.

The first Monday after 12th Night is called Plough Monday. Field workers traditionally returned to work and recieved their pay. Children would handsel for money and treats from the neighbors.

The Norse Midvintersblot, Midwinter's Offering, or the Old English Tiugunde Day ceremony was held 20 days after Yule to honor Tiu, the god of the New Year.

The last Tuesday in January is Up Shally A', a Shetland fire festival culminating in the burning of a Viking ship.

Humor: Blissed Out

I was having an out of body experience one day so I grounded myself and got centered with the help of my spirit guides and almost astral traveled anyway, but the phone rang. I sensed the negative vibrations so I threw the I-Ching and checked my numerology chart and nearly had a primal, but my energy was too blocked, so I did some bioenergetics and self parenting, took some flower essence and ate an organic oat bran ginseng muffin, but my inner child wasn't feeling nurtured yet so I had a Rice Dream Frozen Pie too, but that made me hyper so I did the relaxation response while listening to my subliminal tapes, but I was feeling depersonalized so I did some polarity work, foot reflexology and past life regression, then rebirthed myself and called Moon Beam, the bodyworker, to make an appointment for a Shiatsu, Reike, Rolfing, Feldenkreis, Swedish, Japanese deep tissue massage, but she flaked out and never returned my call, so I decided to energize my crystals and do some positive imagery because all my visualization techniques and affirmations made my space feel invaded, so to get empowered, I got a psychic reading from Mother HeartLove around the issue of my assertiveness so I could feel my radiance and have some energy for my psycho-calisthenics and inversion swing before my harmonic brain-wave synergy session, which made me more focused for my actualization seminar, holistic healing class and dreamworkshop, so I'd be more clear for my Gestalt behavioral cognitive transpersonal Rechian Jungian Freudian Ericksonian session at the hot springs but my aura was weak for my trance-channeling group so I fasted until noon to recharge my chakras and I sensed my intuition was high and my cycle was focused, so I turned on my ion generator to open up for my neural-linguistic programming session, but I needed to have my pyramid recharged before my guided synchronicity meditation, so I got some cranio-sacral therapy, which aligned me for the fire walk, which was between my tarot card reading and my sensory deprivation tank appointment, but after all that I felt what I truly needed was a meaningful relationship to mirror myself so I went to my personal shaman, and then to my guru, but they were no help, so instead I went to the Intensive Whole Life Earth Rebirth Cosmic Expo symposium Workshop to find someone who really knew what was going on, but that didn't work either, so I locked himself in a calcium coated Orgone Box and went to sleep so I could get it in the dream state.

Article : The Warrior’s Path: Pagans in the military
from http://www.tangledmoon.org/

There is a great deal of angry rhetoric appearing in print and being disseminated over the airwaves these days brought on by the discovery that there are many Pagans, Witches, and Wiccans who have chosen the military as a career path. As we who have chosen to follow the calling of a different Divinity than that worshipped by the mainstream become more and more open about out practices, and as our numbers continue to grow, it is only to be expected that there will be further instances of such conflict in the future. So it would appear that there is a need to look at what is happening and why.

To understand the Christian point of view on the subject is perhaps the easiest. We are a religion that is little understood and about which a great many falsehoods have been told. Unlearning the misinformation of hundreds of years of dogmatic teachings will not happen over night. It will take time and effort to show the average Christian the truth of our ways.

To the average Christian, and perhaps even more so the right-wing fundamentalist Christian, there is the erroneous perception that this nation was founded as a Christian nation where only certain beliefs would be accepted and tolerated. The fact is that many of the early Colonies were founded simply because of religious intolerance. As an example, Rhode Island was founded because non-Puritans were not allowed to practice their faith in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Maryland was founded because Catholics were not welcome in other colonies. Given the history of religious intolerance and bloodshed in Europe, and the examples in our own history, our Founding Fathers had the wisdom and foresight to insure that this country would never see that happen again. Hence they wrote into the Constitution, over the objection of some of the churches of the time, that freedom of religion was a right of every citizen. That meant the freedom of every religion. And they insured that the government would never, ever be able to say which religions were acceptable and which were not.

For many years this freedom of religion clause was not a terribly important item of the Constitution. After all, the majority of Americans were at least followers of a Judaic-Christian tradition. Except for the Native Americans of course, but their religion was thought to be merely superstition and they were converted as soon as possible by well-meaning missionaries. But in the 20th century, and particularly since World War II, the United States has seen a great influx of persons from countries where Christianity is not the majority religion. Hindus, Buddhists, Taoists, Janists, and others came from Asia. From Africa came those who followed tribal Gods. And from South America and the Caribbean came Voudoun, Santeria, and many others. Many of these seemed not only strange but threatening to the more militant Christians, who saw their way of life and their image of the United States being undermined by these "foreigners". The upsurge of Neo-Paganism was just the icing on the cake.

Yet throughout, the Right was comfortable in the fact that the military which protected them and their way of life was a Christian organization. And the military with its Chaplains and church presence reinforced this belief. Now that belief has been shattered by the revelation that there are many, many Pagans, Witches, and Wiccans in the military. Pagans with guns. Pagans living in the same barracks rooms with their precious sons and daughters. Pagans being recognized as a "real" religion. To some people this will come merely as a surprise. To those who truly do hate and fear us it is a shock and a source of great anxiety. They understand what their teachings are on loyalty, duty, honor, country....but what do these Pagans believe? How will they behave when called upon to fight?

Yes, I understand the concern of the Christian fundamentalist.

What concerns me more is the response from the Pagan community as a whole with many, many loud and negative voices condemning those of their brothers and sisters who chose the military as a career and a way of life. How are we to answer the Christians if we are fighting among ourselves over the rightness of our choice of path? Where is this anger at fellow Pagans coming from?

To understand that you must also understand where the roots of Neo-Paganism lie. Much of what we now know as the modern Pagan movement arose out of the counter-culture of the 1960's. Both the anti-war movement and the influx of pacifist ideas from Eastern religions contributed to a suspicion of all things having to do with the military. Anyone who would consider putting on a uniform was automatically classified as being a fascist, an unprincipled murderer, and a threat to the society that they wanted to build. Not all of this misapprehension about the military has been vanquished, as is clearly demonstrated to anyone who has read Isaac Bonewits' position on policemen and soldiers. To those who would attack the military professional because they fear that his or her career choice is in violation of the Rede, the knowledge that there are a growing number of their brothers and sisters that chose this path is both an affront and an assault on their beliefs.

There is a popular myth in the neo-Pagan community that claims that once there was a golden age of peace and prosperity in a Goddess worshipping society. In fact, historical and archaeological evidence indicates that our forebears lived in a very dangerous world, threatened by wild beasts, natural disasters, and warring tribes. Out of such a world was the Warrior archetype born as one of the roles that a man would be called upon to play in his lifetime. The Warrior was not the berserker, not the hardened killer, not the raider that preyed on others. No, the Warrior was he that picked up a weapon in defense of his home and kin. He was Father, Brother, Husband as well. In times of peace he would tend his herds and fields and live in harmony with his neighbors. But when his clan was threatened, he would take up arms to defend them. Thus the Warrior was a position of honor and reverence, for he was the one who placed his living body between his kinfolk and that which threatened their survival.

Many centuries have come and gone since our ancestors worshipped in the old ways, but the truth is that the world remains a very dangerous place. Now we are threatened with atomic weapons, ethnic cleansing, terrorist organizations, rogue states, chemical/biological warfare, and perpetrators of genocide. Our very survival as a people and the continuance of our way of life requires that we sometimes fight to defend it. It should be remember that the Rede does not preclude our acting in self-defense when threatened. The modern Pagan soldier who places himself in harm's way to protect his countrymen is no less than the Warrior of ancient times. He does not kill uncaringly, he does not wage war for glory or thrill, he prefers the way of the peacekeeper over that of the soldier. He does not blindly follow orders, rather he weighs what is asked of him against the ethical framework of his religion. But he also understands that until the world becomes a different place, he or she will be called upon in time of crisis to place their life on the line.

It is a sad commentary that the modern Pagan soldier must then find himself reviled by the very people he would die to protect. And there is something that those who seek to distance themselves from Witches and Wiccans should think about when they cry out that no "true" Pagan would ever consider putting on a uniform.. Remember, that when the going gets rough and things are coming down hot and heavy, soldiers listen only to other soldiers....

If you take all of the Goddess-loving, life-affirming, peace-loving Pagan folk out of the military...who do you have left?

Craft of the Week : Citrus Wreath
From Better Homes and Gardens

Fresh citrus slices and nutritious rose hips (fruity seedpods of roses) will attract fruit-eating birds, such as Baltimore Orioles, catbirds, tanagers, red-bellied and red-headed woodpeckers, and house finches. Birds probably won't be daring enough to feast on the wreath if it hangs on your front door, so place it on a fence, gate, or tree.

Oranges (and apples)
Rose hips (you can substitute bunches of juniper, bayberry, or bittersweet)
Hemlock boughs
Knife
Wire cutter
Grapevine wreath, wire, and florist picks (available at crafts stores)

Gather bunches of hemlock stems and attach to wreath by wrapping with wire. Secure branches of rose hips or other berries the same way. Work section by section until you cover the wreath. Cut oranges and apples into halves and sections. Attach to the wreath, pulp side out, using florist picks. Periodically, replace eaten fruit with fresh pieces.

Who's Who in World Mythology : Anubis
For past articles and the bibliography, please go to the Who's Who Archive.

Presiding over the embalming ceremony, Anubis is the jackal-headed Egyptian god of Abydos and Memphis. Anubis is the Greek version of his name however, and to the Egyptians, he was Anpu, Anup, or Wip, meaning watcher and guardian of dogs. His titles include Amy-ut, “he who is in the mortuary,” Khenty-imentiu, “chief of the Westerners,” Khenty-she-netjer, “Chief of the gods’ pavilion,” Neb-ta-d-jeser, “Lord of the sacred land,” and Tepy-dju-ef, “He who is upon the mountain.” Some consider his cult to be older than that of Osiris, and possibly of totemic origin. His deification may have been an attempt to prevent the jackals from devouring the dead.

Around his neck is a collar of magical incantations. Most often he is depicted in the form of a black dog or jackal, usually lying down or crouching, with his ears pricked and his tail hanging.

Less often, he may be seen in human form with a canine head. He is always black due to the color of the corpses once the embalming process is complete and the use of black tar used to seal the bindings. His symbol is an animal skin, headless and dripping blood and tied to a pole.

Born to Osiris and Nephthys (or Bastet), he was hidden (or exposed) in the marshes by his mother to protect him from her husband Set. (An alternate version made him the son of Set or fourth son of Ra.) With the help of some dogs, he was discovered by Isis. He accompanied Osiris in his journeys, and later accompanied Isis as her guard and attendant in her quest to find the dismembered body of Osiris. He is credited with the invention of funerary rites and created the first mummy as he tended the body of Osiris.

Together with Upuaut or Wepwawet, he traveled through the land underworld, leading the dead to the Hall of Two Truths and supervising the weighing of their hearts. For this he is also known as the “claimer of hearts.” He is also known as the “Opener of ways,” and the priest who presided over the opening of the mouth ceremony wore an Anubis mask.

There’s a space for good to bloom in
Every heart of man or woman, -
And however wild or human,
Or however brimmed with gall,
Never heart may beat without it;
And the darkest heart to doubt it
Has something good about it
After all.

The Power of Stones : Acanthite
For past articles and the bibliography, please go to the Power of Stones Archive.

Acanthite forms iron-black orthorhombic crystals (rhombic, prismatic, and trimetric). Its softness precludes its used as a gemstone, but it can still be included in spells. The name comes from the Greek, akanta, meaning "arrow,” probably due to the sharpness of its crystals.

The Anglo-Saxons revered it as a protective stone. Many warriors carried in a small, carved bottle to dispel evil and protect them from danger. It was also thought to bring wisdom and foresight. Acanthite is said to bring strength in times of need. It will also assist in the removal of obstacles and provide a feeling of well-being.

A Dreamer's Guide : Grace to Greyhound
For past articles and the bibliography, please go to the Dreamer's Guide Archive.

If you said or heard Grace before a meal, you can expect to receive some valuable gift or legacy.

A substantial rise in business or social status is augured by your presence or participation at a Graduation.

Grain is a most fortunate omen of prosperity, unless it was spoiled or on fire. You should pay more attention to your business if you wish to avoid hardship if the grain was depicted in a negative way. If you saw a large amount of grain, harvested it, or sold it, you will gain financially, but a small amount means troubles are ahead. Luck and prosperity are presaged if you carried grain to the barn, and sowing it indicates great joy.

If someone corrected your Grammar you’ll be lucky, but expect the worst in any current controversy if you corrected someone else’s grammar. Much work is ahead of you if you saw a grammar book. You will have abundance if you saw children attending or completing grammar school, and good news is on its way if you taught grammar school.

Pleasant news is coming from far away if you dreamt of owning a Gramophone. If you listened to one, a mystery will be solved, and an unexpected discovery will be made if others used one. Familial happiness is assured if you bought one. A broken gramophone is an omen that some occurrence will thwart the joy you held in anticipation.

Grandparents are a symbol of protection and security, and if you spoke to one, it is a sign of an inheritance. If you were a grandparent in your dream, your high ambitions will be realized.

A period of confusion caused by conflict between your business and love life is predicted by the appearance of a Grapefruit in your dream. You should listen to advice, but rely on your own intuition above all else.

Picking or eating Grapes is a warning against sensual pleasures. Your influence will be wide if you saw children eating them, and you will be famous id you handled them on the vine. If you saw them growing or being harvested from the vine however, you will have comfort and plenty in the future, and making them into wine is a sign of abundance. A field of grapes is a symbol of long life, but if you were destroying grapes in your dream, you are being told to mend your ways. White grapes mean victory over an enemy, but black grapes are a warning to be cautious in business. Red grapes indicate a small contradiction, and raisins made from grapes are a sign of the postponement of your success. If you bought grapes, be cautious in business, but your worries are over if you sold them.

You will have to work hard for what you get if you saw sunburned, neglected, or otherwise bad Grass in your dream. Green, well-tended grass is an omen of success in all your projects. If your business is literature or art, a dream of grass means you will rapidly gain in fame and fortune. Eating it indicates sensual pleasure, but if a dog or other animal ate it, you will have poverty. Sowing, rolling, or planting it means you will have security against rainy days, but no luxury. Very long grass indicates illness, but cutting grass means a long life.

Grasshoppers are a sign of confusion ahead. Issues will require delicate handling, but don’t try and go it alone. Get all the advice you can. Grasshoppers in your yard are an especially bad omen if you are sick. You might want to see a doctor. The unexpected arrival of some person is foretold if you killed any grasshoppers, but if others killed them, expect a thief.

Expressing Gratitude in your dream is an augury of some minor good luck, and if someone was grateful to you, you will have an unexpected visitor.

A Grave is never a good dream. A newly prepared grave means you will suffer for the transgressions of others. A new grave with flowers is a symbol of a broken promise, and a neglected grave means heartbreak. An open grave indicates sad news from a distance, and if you fell in, you will lose a friend. If you dug a grave or were aware of your own grave, a secret enemy is moving against you. Walking over a grave is an omen if unhappy married life, but if you destroyed a grave, a marriage will soon occur. The grave of your father is a sign of inheritance, but any other relative’s grave indicates sorrow. A large and happy family event is augured be graves in a monastery, and the graves of your enemies means a large, matrimonial dinner.

Gravel is a sign of obstacles. You will have to expend some energy to get out of your current difficulties if you walked on it, but if you drove over it, the problem will be quickly solved. You troubles are of your own making if you dreamt of spreading gravel, and gravel mixed with dirt foretells poor speculations and the loss of property.

Unlike the negative meanings for a grave, a new Gravestone indicates new opportunities, and an old one means renewed friendships.

Eating or serving Gravy is a warning that you are focusing on meaningless activities over good opportunities. Making gravy however, means a favorable time for speculation or modest gambling has arrived.

You will receive a letter containing good news if you dreamed of the color Gray. Wealth is foretold by gray material, and gray clothing is a sign of some very important and beneficial event. If you saw gray haired men, or were one, you will have success only after difficulties. If you saw or were a gray haired woman, you will realize your high ambitions.

A dream of Grease on yourself or clothing is an omen that you are thinking of something which could turn out to be a great mistake. Think things over again and don’t allow yourself to be influenced by outside pressures. Greasy pots or dishes are a warning not to interfere in the affairs of others, even if asked to do so.

Success is promised by a dream of ancient Greece, but if you were Greek, you will be cheated. You will lose a lover if you went on a trip to Greece, but traveling through Greece means money will soon be in your pocket.

Your ideas will finally be discussed, accepted, and put to practical use if you could read Greek in your dream, but if you were unable to read it, technical difficulties bar your way.

A color long held sacred by many goddesses of love, the color Green indicates your fortune in love. If you saw any green material or bought green clothes, you will have abundance.

Stick to your work if you dreamt of a Greenfinch, and if you owned one, you will avoid taking any losses. Insurmountable obstacles bar your way if you killed a greenfinch.

You are fortunate in love you saw a Greengage. Pleasure and happiness will be yours if you plucked them from a tree, but if you see them out of season, you will be insulted. Great friendships are presaged by greengage jam or jelly.

Unless there was something unpleasant about it, being in a Greenhouse is a prediction of love, success, and a bright future.

A stationary Greyhound is an augury of success and victory over your enemies, but strangely enough, a running greyhound means you have bitten off more than you can chew. You will win at the races if you owned a greyhound or find a friend where you thought there was an enemy, and you can still win at the lottery if someone else owned a greyhound. A greyhound, which follows after a young girl, is a portent of some inheritance from unknown people.
