The Pagan Month of February
can be found in its entirety Here. For more detailed entries, please visit the full calendar.

February was named for the Roman goddess Februa, mother of Mars. As patroness of passion, she was also known as Juno Februa and St. Febronia from febris, the fever of love. Her orgiastic rites were held on February 14th, St.Valentine's Day. In Norse traditions, she is equated with Sjofn.

The Irish called this month Feabhra or an Gearran, the gelding or horse. The horse was used to draw the plough, but Gearran also means 'to cut' and 'Gearran' can be used to describe the 'cutting' Spring winds. To the Anglo-Saxons, this was Solmonath, "sun month," in honor of the gradual return of the light after the darkness of winter. According to Franking and Asatru traditions, this month is Horning, from horn, the turn of the year.

The first full moon of February is called the Quickening Moon. It shares the titles Snow Moon with January and November, Wolf Moon with January and December, and Storm Moon with March and November. February’s Moon is also called the Hunger or Hungry Moon, and it has been called the Ice, Wild, Red and Cleansing, or Big Winter Moon.

Aquarius and Pisces share power over February, with Pisces taking over around the 19th of February. Violet is the flower for those born in February. Though jacinth and pearl appear on some lists, amethyst is the jewel for those born in this month and for Pisces, while aquamarine is the stone for Aquarians. Other stones associated with Aquarius are chrysoprase, garnet, labradorite, lapis lazuli, and opal. Albite, aquamarine, chrysoprase, fluorite, green tourmaline, labradorite, moonstone, and opal are linked to Pisces.

Lunar Holy Days

With the new crescent moon, the Hopi and the Pueblo people hold their Powamu festival. Beans are planted in kivas, large buildings used for religious rituals. As many as two hundred Kachina dancers will perform rituals while the beans grow to ensure a good crop, but Eototo is the chief of all Kachinas and controls the seasons. He is the spiritual counterpart of the village chief and is called father of the Kachinas. During the Bean Dance of the Third Mesa, he conducts an elaborate ceremony by drawing cloud symbols in corn flour. Aholi (Eototo's reinforcer) places his staff in the center of the symbols and waves it in an all-encompassing fashion, while giving out a long call. This dance is designed to draw the clouds and moisture to the pueblo. Children between the ages of six and ten are initiated into their Kachina societies, receiving gifts from the dancers.

The 19th day of the first moon is the Rats' Wedding in China. The day honors household rats in order to propitiate them. Salt and grains of rice are sprinkled inside the home to share fortune with the rats.

Meditation is not concentration, which is exclusion,
a cutting off, a resistance and so a conflict.
A meditative mind can concentrate,
which then is not an exclusion, a resistance,
but a concentrated mind cannot meditate.

Craft of the Week: Egg Carton Dragon

Make your dragon as short or as long as you wish.

Paper egg carton
Scissors
Hole punch
Paint brush
craft paint and paint brushes
7mm Wiggle eyes
1/4" White pom-pom balls
Red felt scrap
Tacky glue
2 Jingle bells (1/2")
Ribbon (we used 1/4" wide)

Cut the cups apart on the egg carton. Even out the edges so the cup will sit evenly upside down on the table. Paint the inside of one cup black for the inside of the mouth. Using as few or as many cups as you wish, paint the outsides. Let dry. Hole punch 2 holes in each cup directly across from each other. Lace the ribbon through the holes to tie the dragon together. Tie a jingle bell on each end of the ribbon. Glue the head on the dragon. Note: You may need to "prop" the head up while it dries. Cut a red tongue out of felt and glue inside of mouth. Glue 2 pom-poms on top of the head and then glue 2 wiggle eyes attaching them to the pom-poms. Let dry. You can add jewels or sequins to dress it up. And if you like, you can add a "leash" through the hole of the dragon to walk it around. Be as fancy or plain as you wish.

Agassou is a Panther fetish god of the former royal house of Benin of the Dahomey tribes. He is often invoked as Agassou-Dos-Miroir, or Agassou of the back of the mirror. The fetish religion of the Dahomeys is seen as a precursor to Haitian voodoo. He is also referred to as Agassou-Allah-Da, Attiassou Yangodor and Mam'bo Ati-A-Sou.

The Magi's Garden: (Wild) Carrot
For past featured foliage and the bibliography, please go to the
The Magi's Garden Archive.

Wild Carrot (Daucus carota)

Folk Names: Bee's Nest, Bee's Nest Plant, Bird's Nest, Bird's Nest Root, Devil's Plague, Elaphoboscum (Greek), Philtron, Queen Anne's Lace, Sisaron (Greek), Staphylinos (Greek)

Description: The carrot is biennial and grows in temperate parts of America. It is closely related to the Parsnip and Skirret. When it grows wild, it has a tough, slender, white, vertical root and a rosette of ferny leaves in the first year. Only cultivated members of this species have the succulent sweet root we have al come to know and love. The ribbed stem is hairy and branched, appearing the following year and reaching up to two to three feet. The leaves of the stem are alternate, bipinnate and cut into many fine divisions and delicate pronged green bracts near the base of the flower. The seven to thirteen, stiff, three-forked bracts appear under the umbel. Lacy white concave umbels of flowers with red-purple dot in the center appear from April to October. The flower heads close up to a cup shape when it goes to seed.

Effects: strong
Planet: Mars, Mercury
Element: fire
Associated Deities:

Traditions:
The red flower in the middle of the flower head is said symbolize a drop of blood from Queen Anne (1665-1714) who pricked her finger making lace.

The name carrot is Celtic and means “red of color.” Daucus comes from the Greek dais, meaning “to burn.”

Magic:
Women are instructed to eat carrot seeds for fertility, especially wild ones. Carrots may also be eaten for lust and to cure impotence.

Some folklore says that eating carrots or their seeds will allow one to see in the dark.

The red flower at the center of the flower head is said to prevent epileptic seizure.

Known Combinations:
none noted

Medical Indications: (Caution: Do not mistake with poisonous hemlocks which does not have a hairy stem.) Parts Used: root, seed
Carrot is an anthelmintic, carminative, diuretic, and stimulant. The leaf or root tea is used for kidney disease, stones, and bladder problems. Carrot shavings in a little lemon juice may be used in astringent masks for oily skin. Carrot soup is easily digestible for those with stomach or intestinal problems and is an excellent convalescent food for diarrhea. It prevents putrification in the intestines and gastrointestinal catarrh. The juice is also useful for treating acidity and heartburn. In addition, the essential oil of the seed is effective against roundworm. Eating two to three seeds a day for several days would be just as effective as the oil. An infusion or decoction of seeds is used for flatulence, and to promote menstruation. A poultice of the root or the leaves with honey are soothing for skin ulcers and running sores.

Nutrition:
The root is tough and woody but in a first year plant, it is still edible and may be harvested in the fall to early spring. Cook it in vegetable stews. Personally, I prefer carrots raw and crunchy.

Sugar syrup may be made from carrot juice, and the roots can be dried and powdered to make flour for bread. Carrots also contain more than enough pectin to make them suitable for jams and jellies.

In Germany, finely chopped carrots have been roasted and used as a coffee substitute. In France, England, and Germany, the root has been used to make alcohol. What is left from this brewing may be fed to the pigs.

Mercantile Uses:
Wild carrot is used in livestock feed.

The flowers and stalks may be combined with alum for a yellow dye.

Poem : A Dragon Is in My Computer
By Jack Prelutsky

A dragon is in my computer,
It’s there when I turn on the screen,
It stares at me fierce and unfriendly,
Through eyes of malevolent green.
It hisses and spits little fires,
It flicks its preposterous tail,
I’ve tried every trick to erase it,
But all of my strategems fail.

It’s there when I’m doing my homework,
It’s there when I’m playing a game,
My mouse does its best to erase it,
That dragon remains all the same.
It may disappear for a minute,
But always comes slithering back,
Appearing on top of my program,
Resuming its nasty attack.

I have no idea where it came from,
Or why it keeps picking on me,
Examining me like a morsel
It’s thinking it might fricassee.
I wish I could douse it with water
And bop it a bit on the snout
A dragon is in my computer –
I hope that it never gets out!

Quote : Arthur Schopenhauer (1788-1860)
How very paltry and limited the normal human intellect is,
and how little lucidity there is in the human consciousness,
may be judged from the fact that, despite the ephemeral brevity
of human life the uncertainty of our existence
and the countless enigmas which press upon us from all sides,
everyone does not continually and ceaselessly philosophize,
but that only the rarest of exceptions do.
