The Pagan Month of April
can be found in its entirety Here. For more detailed entries, please visit the full calendar.
The name of this month comes from the Latin word aperire, "to open." This is appropriate for a month of blossoming flowers dedicated to Aphrodite.
The Anglo-Saxon name for this month is Eastermonath, the month of Eostre the goddess of Spring and origin of Easter. The Irish word for April is Aibrean or an Giblean. The end of April is known as Seachtain an t-Sionnaich, end of the winds. The Franks called it Ostarmanoth. The Asatru and many other Pagans call it Ostara.
The first Full Moon of this month is called Seed of Planting Moon, Budding Tree Moon, or Growing Moon. It is also referred to as Pink Moon, Green Grass Moon, Planter or Planting Moon, and Hare Moon, names it shares with May’s Moon. It also shares the name, Wind Moon, with March.
On April 20th, the zodiac turns from Aries to Taurus. April’s stone and the birthstone of The sweat pea is the flower for April children. Aries is the diamond, though on some older lists, sapphire is the stone for the month of April. The birthstone for Taurus is the emerald. Aries also lays claim to amethyst, carnelian, garnet, fire agate, pink tourmaline, and topaz, while aquamarine, lapis lazuli, kunzite, rose quartz, and sapphire are associated with Taurus.
Lunar Holy Days
The Christian holiday of Easter falls on the first Sunday after the first Full Moon of the spring equinox. Though one of the most important Christian holidays, it was drawn together from many pagan traditions, and its name came from the goddess of Spring, Eostre. The Easter Bunny is a fertility symbol of Teutonic origin, and the hare was an emblem of Eostre. Eggs, a major part of the celebration, also have their origin as fertility symbols.
The first Thursday after the 19th of April is Sumarda Gurinn-fyrsti, the first day of summer in Iceland.
The first or third Saturday in April is Glen Saturday. The children of Kilmarnock, Ayrshire gather to pick daffodils at Crawfurdland Castle.

An Indian from Dakshineswar dies and goes to hell. There he finds that a different hell exists for each country.
Curious whether one hell might not be better than another, he first visits the German hell and asks," What do they do here?" "First they put you in an electric chair for an hour. Then they lay you on a bed of nails for another hour. Then the German devil comes in and whips you for the rest of the day." The man does not like the sound of that at all, so he moves on. He checks out the United States hell as well as the Russian hell and many more, but he discovers that they are all more or less the same as the German hell. Then he comes to the Indian hell and finds that there is a very long line of people waiting to get in. Amazed he asks, "What do they do here?" He is told, "First they put you in an electric chair for an hour. Then they lay you on a bed of nails for another hour. Then the Indian devil comes in and whips you for the rest of the day." "What? But that is exactly the same as all the other hells! Why are there so many people waiting to get in?" "Because maintenance is so bad that the electric chair does not work, someone has stolen all the nails from the bed, and the devil was a software engineer, so he arrives late, comes in and checks his email, and then goes to the cafeteria..." |

What is an Aura?
The aura is the electromagnetic field that surrounds the human body (Human Energy Field-HEF) and every organism and object in the Universe. The Human Energy Field as a collection of electro - magnetic energies of varying densities that permeate through and emit or exit from the physical body of a living person. These particles of energy are suspended around the healthy human body in an oval shaped field. This "auric egg" emits out from the body approximately 2-3 feet (1 meter on average) on all sides. It extends above the head and below the feet into the ground.
What does an Aura consist of?
The aura consist of seven levels/layers/auric bodies . Each one of the subtle bodies that exist around the physical body has its own unique frequency. They are interrelated, and affect one another and the person's feelings, emotions, thinking, behavior, and health as well. Therefore a state of imbalance in one of the bodies leads to a state of imbalance in the others.
The Auric Bodies and your needs on each level of auric field
1) Physical auric body - Physical sensations. Simple physical comfort, pleasure, health.2) The etheric auric body - Emotions with respect to self. Self-acceptance and self love.
3) Vital auric body - Rational mind. To understand the situation in a clear, linear, rational way.
4) Astral (emotional) body - Relations with others. Loving interaction with friends and family.
5) Lower mental auric body - Divine will within. To align with the divine will within, to make commitment to speak and follow the truth.
6) Higher mental auric body - Divine love, and spiritual ecstasy.
7) Spiritual (intuitive) body - Divine mind, serenity. To be connected to divine mind and to understand the greater universal pattern.

Changes in the Aura
The main part of the color and energy in the aura is provided and activated by the action of the chakras. According to the colors of the person's aura, it is possible to know if his/hers awareness is located more in the physical, mental, spiritual or intellectual layers, and if there is some kind of imbalance between these areas and the action of the chakras.
The aura fluctuates, as a response to changes within you and in the environmental. The two main fluctuations are in the color and the shape. Most of the aura color changes result from changes within; the sum of all colors may fade or intensify according to the person's mood and emotional, mental, and physical states. The spiritual sate also has an enormous effect on the colors and size of the aura. The changes in shape are usually inflicted from outside. The size of the aura may also change in both cases.
Aura Color Changes
The colors of your aura breathe, expand and contract, so all the colors start to dance. In a healthy person the colors are pure, bright, and quite dense or strong. Happiness creates sparkling movement, and a slightly shiny effect. Feeling of love overlay the aura with the colors of pink and violets. Sadness represents a law energy state, and the colors become slightly dimmer, even dull. Dreamy people also have faint auras; they are less grounded physically, so the colors are less solid.
The two most common discolorations of the aura are brown and gray. They are results of "energy in" not equal to "energy out". A gray discoloration suggests the creation of a barrier to an energy input of some description. This should be at mental level (unwillingness to take somebody's ideas), at emotional level (fear of an emotional involvement), or at metabolic or physical level (lack of desire for food). Brown indicates "holding on" to energy that needs to be let go. Someone who freely takes, but rarely gives is likely to have this brown discoloration of congested energies.
Even the food you eat has an impact on the quality of colors in your aura. Highly processed foods, especially those that are packaged, sealed and stored, lack energy and produce a correspondingly thin aura. If you eat too much meat, your aura becomes denser.
The change in your consciousness is also reflected in your aura. The normal, beta pulse rate (during normal human activity is 21 cycles per second) produces the typical multi-colored aura. As your rate slows to alpha (13 cycles per second), the aura shows a blue overlay. At seta ( 8 cycles per second), the blue gives way to gold, and if the delta state is reached ( 5 cycles per second), the aura is almost white, lightly tinged with magenta. In effect, you are moving through all the levels of consciousness of the evolutionary process.
Aura Shape Changes
Shock is the most likely cause of shape changes to the aura. It may cause your aura to shift away from your head or heart, leaving both unprotected. The effect of this is to separate your spirit from your physical sensations. If the shock is severe enough to shift your aura away from your hart region, your emotions will no longer feel connected with your body. You may feel as you are about to faint, or on the verge of a nervous breakdown. A less severe shock (such as witnessing an accident) may regularize after about 24 hours. During that time you may feel vulnerable, insecure, and unable to accept any form of responsibility. You lack connection between your personality and your mental activities.
A mild shock (cutting yourself or falling down) may shift your aura briefly away from your head. To bring your protective aura back into place, taking a deep breath is usually enough.
Negative emotions can also alter the shape of your aura. Hate and jealousy produce a jagged edge to the auric layers, which weakens the structure, which means that your protection is undermined.

Craft of the Week: Seeing and Reading the Aura
from http://www.paralumun.com/
Everybody has the ability to see the aura. For beginners a low light is the best way to start. Turn out the lights and lay on the bed. Leave the window curtains open and let the natural light flow in. As you are laying on the bed hold your hands out at full distance in front of you.
Dont stare hard but rather just gaze at your hands. Moving your hands slowly, bring your fingertips together until they are almost touching. You will notice a cloudy blue haze appear around your finger. This is the etheric aura.

Humor : The Porpoise |
---|
There was this guy who always became dangerously attached to his pets. One day his dog of ten years was hit by a truck and killed. The man became suicidal, but before he offed himself, he decided to talk to a shrink first.
After many sessions the shrink suggested the guy should get a porpoise -his reasoning being that with its lifespan, it'll outlive its owner. The guy thinks its a great idea, if a bit illegal, and decides to get one. However, the shrink warned him that he would need to build a pool and also feed the porpoise baby seagulls everyday. So the guy built his pool, bought his porpoise, and became quite proficient at robbing seagull nests of their young. As time passes though, he was forced to travel farther and farther from home in order to obtain the baby gulls. One day he was forced to travel very far away from his house and was gone almost an entire day. While he was gone, a lion escaped from the state zoo by his house. He returned in the evening with a sack full of the baby seagulls, only to find the lion sleeping across his front walkway. He forced himself to step over the sleeping lion, knowing that his porpoise was in desperate need of food. Just as his foot hit the pavement on the other side of the lion, a cop car pulled up with its siren blaring and lights flashing. Two officers jumped out of the car with their guns drawn, shouting "Stop right there!" Turning to the officers, he asked what the problem was. One of the officers replied, "You're crossing the state lion with underage gulls for immortal porpoises!" |
Who's Who in World Mythology : Baal gods
For past articles and the bibliography, please go to the
Who's Who Archive.
Many Middle Eastern gods received the title of Baal or lord.
There was Baal-Addir, or the “Mighty Lord.” From Byblos, his cult spread to North Africa. He may have been a god of the underworld or vegetation, or both. The African troops of the Roman army identified him with Jupiter Valens.
Baal-Berith is the “Lord of the Covenant,” a god who presided over contracts and agreements.
Baal-Biq’ah is the “Lord of the Plain.” He was patron of the city of Baalbek, which was named for him, but he was principally a weather deity. During the Hellenistic period he became a sky or sun god and was identified with Zeus. Under the Romans he became Jupiter Heliopolitanus, for by then, Baalbek had been renamed Heliopolis.
Baal Enet Mahartet is a Ugarit rain god.
Baal-Hadad is the “Lord of Thunder” and rider of the clouds in Syria. He was also called Baal-Rammon. In his capacity as a warrior, he was called “Price-Lord” or Baalzebul. This manifestation will be dealt with more fully when I get to Beelzebub. Mount Sapon in Palestine was named for Baal-Sapon (or Sapan), another of Baal-Hadad’s manifestations. As Sapan, he was the conqueror of the sea-god Jamm and therefore acted as a protector of mariners. Mount Sapon may have been used as a beacon for seafarers. This is true also of Baal-Hermon, Baal Brathy, and other Baals associated with coastal mounts.
Baal-Hammon or Aleyn-Baal was the chief fertility god of Carthage. From there, his cult spread to the islands of Malta, Sicily, and Sardinia. The earliest inscription mentioning this deity comes from the Phoenician settlement of Zindsirli. His name is taken to mean “Lord of the Censer Altars,” and he is the husband of Tanit or Tanit Pene Ba’al. He was chiefly a fertility god however, a theory borne out in the Roman appellation of Frugifer or “Fruit-bearer.” One of the main practices of his worship was the sacrifice of children, both in Sicily and North Africa. He was also regarded as an oracular god due to the similarities between his name and the god Ammon. The Greeks identified him with Kronos however, and the Romans paired him with Saturn. He is depicted as a bearded old man wearing rams horns on his head.
Baal-Karmelos was worshipped on Mount Carmel in Canaan where he (or his priests) delivered oracles. He was still venerated in Roman times by Emperor Vespasian.
Baal-Lebanon was a Semite god of lightning, rain, and thunder.
Baal-Malage is a Phoenician tutelary god, probably of Canaanite origin. He is closely equated with Baal-Shamayim, but is known only from inscriptions.
Baal-Marqod was a healing god with a curative well. But perhaps he was also a healer through rituals resembling whirling dervishes, as his name means “Lord of the Dance.” His shrine was located near the modern city of Beirut. The Romans identified him with Jupiter.
Baal-Melkart was the chief god of Tyre and followed the Phoenicians to Carthage where he became one of the chief gods of the city.
Baal-Peor will be covered under the Moabite god Chemosh.
Baal-Qarnain is the “Lord of Two-Horns.” He was named for two mountain peaks close to the Gulf of Tunis. The Romans identified him with Saturn as Saturnus Balcarnensis. He is considered a possible manifestation of Baal-Hammon.
Baal-Shamain may have been equated with Shamash. In Babylonian mythology, he was a sky god and was identified in Philo with the sun.
Baal-Shamayim (Balsamem, Balsamin, Balshamin, Balshameme, Belshim, Baal-Sammin, or Baal-Samem) was the Phoenician “Lord of the Heavens,” and the most serious threat to the supremacy of Yahweh. He was also referred to as “Lord of the World,” the “Good and Renewing God,” “Lord of Eternity,” and “Master of the Skies.” His cult was widespread throughout Syria, Northern Mesopotamia, Cyprus, and Carthage. He is portrayed on some coinage with a half-moon on his forehead and carrying a sun in one hand with seven rays. To the Romans he was Caelus, “the sky.”
Baal-Sutekh is equated with Anat.

The Magi's Garden: Centaury
For past featured foliage and the bibliography, please go to the
The Magi's Garden Archive.
Centaury (Centaurium spp, C. umbellatum or Erythraea centaurium)
Description: Centaury is a European and North African annual or biennial, depending upon where it is grown. It has been naturalized to North American, from Quebec to Michigan, south to Georgia and Indiana, and along the western coast from northwest California north to Washington and east to Idaho. Centaury may be found in damp meadows and forest clearings, and it prefers sandy soils. The yellowish root is fibrous and woody. A stem rises four to twenty inches from a rosette of ovate basal leaves. It is quadrangular to hexagonal, is hollow when older, and branched near top. The stem leaves are opposite, sessile, and ovate-oblong to lanceolate. The leaves are pale green, smooth and shiny, with undivided margins. Rose-red to blue or purple, 5 petaled, funnel-shaped flowers appear in cymes from June to September. The corolla is cleft in five and the flower also has five stamens. One variety has a white corolla. After shedding their pollen, the anthers have a unique way of twisting about which serves to distinguish centaury from the similar gentian. The flowers open only in good weather, and usually not after midday. They close at night.
Effects: strong
Planet: sun
Element: fire
Associated Deities: Chiron
Traditions:
Centaury was originally called Chironia for the most famous centaur, Chiron, who lived on Mt Pelion as a trainer of heroes and other learned men. He is said to have cured himself with this flower when poisoned by an arrow dipped in the blood of Hydra.
Magic:
An incense containing centaury drives off snakes and reduces anger and other negative energies. It adds power to any mixtures meant for meditation and visualization.
Known Combinations:
Medieval witches are thought to have mixed it in their incenses to increase psychic powers. They experienced strange feelings, inexplicable thoughts, and strange ideas. Traditionally the powdered herb was mixed with the blood of a female lapwing or black plover and added it to lamp oil, and so it may be helpful to call upon these animals. Modern practitioners mix it with honey and rub it on candles.
Medical Indications: (Caution: Excessive use will cause nausea. A strong decoction is emetic and laxative.) Parts Used: flowering herb (collected in July)
Centaury is an appetizer and digestive, cholagogue, febrifuge, and carminative. It contains erythrocentaurin, which stimulates the flow of saliva and gastric juices and secretions of bile. A strong infusion is diaphoretic, while a light infusion acts as a tonic. Tea made from the flowers stimulates salivary, stomach, and intestinal glands, relieving constipation and gas and promoting proper digestion. It acts to ease heartburn and may help jaundice. Centaury also treats colic, suppressed menstruation, and anemia. Taken over time, it may help you to loose weight.
Lotion containing the plant is used on blemishes, freckles, and spots. The fresh plant, bruised, is applied to new wounds and old ones which will not heal.
Nutrition:
no notable nutritional uses
Mercantile Uses:
The flowers are used for blue dye.

Poem : And thou art dead, as young and fair
George Gordon (Lord) Byron (1788-1824)
As aught of mortal birth;
And form so soft, and charms so rare,
Too soon return'd to Earth!
Though Earth receiv'd them in her bed,
And o'er the spot the crowd may tread
In carelessness or mirth,
There is an eye which could not brook
A moment on that grave to look.
I will not ask where thou liest low,
Nor gaze upon the spot;
There flowers or weeds at will may grow,
So I behold them not:
It is enough for me to prove
That what I lov'd, and long must love,
Like common earth can rot;
To me there needs no stone to tell,
'T is Nothing that I lov'd so well.
Yet did I love thee to the last
As fervently as thou,
Who didst not change through all the past,
And canst not alter now.
The love where Death has set his seal,
Nor age can chill, nor rival steal,
Nor falsehood disavow:
And, what were worse, thou canst not see
Or wrong, or change, or fault in me.
The better days of life were ours;
The worst can be but mine:
The sun that cheers, the storm that lowers,
Shall never more be thine.
The silence of that dreamless sleep
I envy now too much to weep;
Nor need I to repine
That all those charms have pass'd away,
I might have watch'd through long decay.
The flower in ripen'd bloom unmatch'd
Must fall the earliest prey;
Though by no hand untimely snatch'd,
The leaves must drop away:
And yet it were a greater grief
To watch it withering, leaf by leaf,
Than see it pluck'd to-day;
Since earthly eye but ill can bear
To trace the change to foul from fair.
I know not if I could have borne
To see thy beauties fade;
The night that follow'd such a morn
Had worn a deeper shade:
Thy day without a cloud hath pass'd,
And thou wert lovely to the last,
Extinguish'd, not decay'd;
As stars that shoot along the sky
Shine brightest as they fall from high.
As once I wept, if I could weep,
My tears might well be shed,
To think I was not near to keep
One vigil o'er thy bed;
To gaze, how fondly! on thy face,
To fold thee in a faint embrace,
Uphold thy drooping head;
And show that love, however vain,
Nor thou nor I can feel again.
Yet how much less it were to gain,
Though thou hast left me free,
The loveliest things that still remain,
Than thus remember thee!
The all of thine that cannot die
Through dark and dread Eternity
Returns again to me,
And more thy buried love endears
Than aught except its living years.

A man was having trouble sleeping because of a weird dream he kept having. Finally he followed his wife's advice and went to a psychiatrist. "Doc, I just have to get some sleep," he said, "but I can't because I keep waking up from this bizarre dream I keep having. Can you please help me?"
"Ok, let's start by having you describe the dream," replies the shrink. "Well, first I dream that I am a teepee, then I dream I am a wigwam," the man says. "Can you help me figure out my problem?" The doctor smiles reassuringly and responds, "I know what your problem is. You're two tents." |
A Dreamer's Guide : Opal to Orchard
For past articles and the bibliography, please go to the
Dreamer's Guide Archive.
Present peril will give rise to undreamt of profit if you saw an Opal, especially if they were fire opals. Business will be good if you owned an opal, but wearing one indicates misfortune in love. Love will bring you happiness if you bought one, while selling one foretells disputes with your lover. You will discover lost valuables if you saw other people wearing an opal.
Opera indicates good friends will entertain you and your immediate plans will be fruitful. If it was a comedic opera, a child may soon be born. A dramatic opera foretells fortunate events, but if it was melodramatic, you are too superstitious. (Guess you shouldn’t be interpreting you dreams! Heh)
You will experience much pain if you dreamt you were scheduled for an Operation, but if you actually went under the knife, your success is guaranteed. You will be very lucky if you observed an operation. An unsuccessful operation is a sign of corruption, but you have plenty of friends if the patient pulled through. If you performed the operation, your future looks prosperous. More than one operating doctor is a warning of deception, but an assisting nurse augurs success.
Sly and seductive strangers will block your chances for the future if you dreamt of Opium. You will suffer humiliation if you prescribed it as a medicine. Social disgrace is foretold if you took opium, especially if you took it in company. Worries lie ahead of you if you encouraged friends to use it.
You will triumph over your rivals if you dreamt of an Opponent, but if you fought him or her, you are doomed to failure. Opposition and quarrels will plague you if you had several opponents.
An Opossum is a warning that ignoring your problems will not make them go away.
You will make much money if you visited an Optician or were one in your dream. Selling glasses as an optician means you will have good earnings. If you bought glasses, your age embarrasses you, and wearing them indicates an extravagant lifestyle. Taking children to an optician means family security. (see also Oculist)
Living in fairy-like Opulence means you will be deceived by a pretty façade. More common shows of wealth will mostly likely follow the dreamer into the waking world
Fortune is promised by anything of an Orange color. Orange clothes are an augury of small gains.
Eating Oranges is a bad sign. The sickness of friends or relatives will be worrisome, and dissatisfaction will arise within your business through your own fault. This is only slightly alleviated if the orange tasted good. If you saw an orange thrown high into the air, you will choose your lover wisely. Slipping on an orange peel foretells the death of a relative. If your spouse demanded you buy this fruit and then ate them, unpleasant complications will resolve themselves into profit. Generally buying an orange is an indication of disappointment in love however. The death of someone in the military is foretold if you made marmalade, and peeling an orange presages the death of a relative.
An Orange tree means you will shed tries, but healthy trees with ripe fruit are a sign of health and prosperity. Any planned trip will prove unsuccessful if you planted a tree. Picking the blossoms is an omen of marriage, and making a crown of the blossoms means a happy marriage. If you wore a crown of blossoms, your virginity is safe.
An Orangutan means some faithless person is using you to further their own selfish goals.
An eloquent Orator indicates you will follow a flatterer to your own injury. If you fell in love with an orator, superficial and material things will influence your love.
Passing through or leaving an Orchard presages the consummation of a long courtship. If you were in an orchard full of ripe fruit, your plans will come to prosperous fruition or your superiors will see fit to reward your faithful service. Being in an orchard with children predicts family happiness.
Gathering the ripe fruit is an omen of plenty. Green fruit indicates bad friends. If you saw hogs eating the fallen fruit, you will lose property in trying to claim that which does not really belong to you. An orchard afflicted by blight denotes misery in the midst of joy and wealth, and an orchard stripped of fruit means you will lose an advancement opportunity. If fruit was scarce, your position will improve with patience. A jealous rival or fight with your dearest is foretold if you were caught in brambles while attempting to pass through an orchard.
