The Pagan Month of July
can be found in its entirety Here. For more detailed entries, please visit the full calendar.

July was named for Julius Caesar who reorganized the previously skewed calendar to what is now called the Julian calendar. Instituted in 26 BC, this was known as the Year of Confusion because of the irritation switching the calendar caused. This was the calendar of the west for the next 1600 years. July is sacred to Apt (or Apet), Athena, Sothis, Spider Woman, and Rosea.

The Irish name for this month was Iúil or an t-Iuchar, the border time. Traditionally during the last two weeks of July and the first two weeks of August, Sirius, the dog star, can be seen in the sky. The Anglo-Saxon name was Aeftera Litha, "after Litha," or sometimes Maedmonat, "meadow month." Hewimanoth, "hay month," was the Frankish name, and the Asatru call it Haymoon.

The first Full Moon is called the Buck Moon. It is also the Blessing or Wort Moon and the Honey Moon, a name it shares with June’s Moon. It is also called the Moon of Claiming, Fallow Moon, Thunder Moon, a name shared with August, and Moon of Blood (due to mosquitoes), a name it share with October.

The sun passes from Cancer to Leo on July 23rd. The birth flower for July is the larkspur. Onyx, sardonyx, carnelian, turquoise or rubies are the stones listed for those born in July. The birthstone of Cancer is the moonstone or pearl, while Leo’s stone is the ruby, onyx, or smoky quartz. Albite, chrysoprase, emerald, green tourmaline, opal, pink tourmaline, and rhodochrosite are also significant to Cancers, and amber, carnelian, chrysocolla, citrine, fire agate, garnet, pink tourmaline, ruby, and topaz are associated with Leo.

Lunar Holy Days

The seventh of the seventh moon is the Chhit Sek or Chilsuk, a Chinese holiday honoring the meeting of the Heavenly Spinning Lady (the star Vega) and her lover, the Cowherd (the star Altair). (See also July 7th)

The last Sunday in July is the Procession of Witches in Beselare, Belgium.

Humor: Creation of Dogs and Cats
It is reported that the following addition to the Book of Genesis was discovered in the Dead Sea Scrolls. If authentic, it would shed light on the question, "Where do pets come from?"
And Adam said, "Lord, when I was in the garden, you walked with me every day. Now I do not see you anymore. I am lonesome here and it is difficult for me to remember how much you love me."
And God said, "No problem! I will create a companion for you that will be with you forever and who will be a reflection of my love for you, so that you will know I love you, even when you cannot see me. Regardless of how selfish and childish and unlovable you may be, this new companion will accept you as you are and will love you as I do, in spite of yourself."
And God created a new animal to be a companion for Adam.
And it was a good animal. And God was pleased.
And the new animal was pleased to be with Adam, and he wagged his tail. And Adam said, "But Lord, I have already named all the animals in the Kingdom, and all the good names are taken, and I cannot think of a name for this new animal."
And God said, "No problem! Because I have created this new animal to be a reflection of my love for you, his name will be a reflection of my own name, and you will call him DOG."
And Dog lived with Adam and was a companion to him and to Eve, and loved them. And Adam was comforted.
And God was pleased.
And Dog was content and wagged his tail.
After a while, it came to pass that Adam's guardian angel came to the Lord and said, "Lord, Adam has become filled with pride. He struts and preens like a peacock and believes he is worthy of adoration. Dog has indeed taught him that he is loved, but no one has taught him humility."
And the Lord said, "No problem! I will create for him a companion who will be with him forever and who will see him as he is. The companion will remind him of his limitations, so he will know he is not worthy of adoration."
And God created CAT to be a companion for Adam.
And Cat would not obey Adam.
And when Adam gazed into Cat's eyes, he was reminded that he was not the Supreme Being. And Adam learned humility. And God was pleased. And Adam was greatly improved.
And Cat did not care one way or the other.

Article : Feline Folktales – Cats in Folklore and Superstition
from http://www.messybeast.com/folktails.htm
Copyright Sarah Hartwell

There are hundreds of feline folktales and superstitions - cats predict the weather, sense domestic disharmony, steal a baby's breath, steal a dead person's soul, bring either good or bad luck and carry away a sick person's germs. Cats' eyes tell the time or the tides. Cats are witch's familiars, enchanted princesses, beloved by priests and prophets or envoys of the devil since they were sneezed forth by lions on the Ark and not created by God. This is very much a romp through some of the feline folktales and superstitions found around the world.

Cats and Gods

The fecund cat is often been associated with fertility. The Scandinavian goddess Freyja rode in a chariot drawn by cats so farmers left out offerings for her cats to ensure a good harvest. In parts of Europe, a cat decorated with ribbons was released in the field after harvest-time to appease the gods. The Peruvian fertility god Ai Apaec could assume the form of a tomcat. A Chinese cat deity Li Shou warded off evil spirits at night and the Roman goddess Diana sometimes wore the form of a cat.

Chinese legends say that cats were put in charge of the world and had the power of speech. The cats soon delegated this job to humans so that felines could laze about. That is why cats can no longer speak and why they wear supercilious expressions when they see us scurrying about!

The shadowy patches on the necks of Siamese cats are the thumbprints of gods who picked the cats up to admire them. Birman cats started out as a plain brown cats until one jumped on the body of a Burmese priest slain by Thai invaders and the priest's spirit passed into it. The cat's body turned golden while its head, tail and legs remained brown. The cat's feet went pure white as they had touched the holy man's skin.

In Ancient Egypt, cats captured the glow of the setting sun in their eyes and kept it safe until morning, making it unlawful for cats to be killed (except in ritual sacrifice by priests). When the Persians attacked part of Egypt they tied cats to their shields - the Egyptians dared not put up a fight in case they injured or killed the cats.

To Muslims pigs and dogs are unclean, but the fastidious cat is tolerated. The Prophet Mohammed had a tabby cat which fell asleep on the sleeve of his robe. Rather than disturb the cat, he cut off his sleeve when he answered the muezzin (call to prayer). This cat once warned Mohammed of danger and to this day tabby cats have the 'M' mark on the foreheads in remembrance of his blessing and three dark lines on their backs where he stroked his cat.

The Egyptians believed the 'M' to depict the sacred Scarab beetle while in Christian folklore it is the mark of the Virgin Mary who blessed a cat which killed a venomous snake sent by the Devil to bite the Christ child in his crib. In a related version from Christian folklore, the infant Jesus was laying in the manger shivering from cold. Alerted by his cries, a mother tabby cat lay next to the child to warm him up. In gratitude, Mary stroked the cats forehead, marking it with an 'M' and to this day, the caring mother cat's descendents all carry the mark of Mary.

The non-religious version suggests that the 'M' is a set of frown-lines where the cat has been staring at a mouse-hole in concentration, waiting for the mouse emerge!

Cats, Demons, and Fairykind

Cats are often associated with demons and the three hairs on the tips of a cats tail are the devils hairs and cause the cat to prowl at night when all God-fearing beasts should sleep. In the southern parts of America the Devil sought retribution on anyone who drowned a cat and dispensed rheumatism for the lesser crime of kicking a cat.

In Britain, kittens born at the end of the blackberry season were notoriously mischievous since Satan was cast out of Heaven at this time of year and landed among brambles while those born in May were often drowned as they were thought to make poor hunters.

Fisherman sometimes throw a bit of fish back into the sea 'for the cat'. This cat was the animal form of a suspected witch who went to see with her fisherman lover and brought destruction on the whole fleet to spite those who wanted her drowned as a witch. Many seafarers believed that if a cat fell overboard it would call up a storm to sink the ship. The Russian Karellian cat is a longhaired bobtailed cat. Karellians are believed to be enchanted princesses.

Many cultures consider cats to be mystical creatures which were really fairies or goblins in disguise hence the Norwegian Forest Cat is sometimes called the Fairy-Cat. Stare deeply into a cat's eyes and you will see visions of the fairy world which is spying on us through those self-same eyes. In Japan, vampires can disguise themselves as cats but are readily identified by having two tails while sorcerers disguised as cats enter houses to devour naughty children!

In a British folktale akin to Rumpelstiltskin a princess has to spin 10,000 skeins of pure white linen in order to save her betrothed from a sorcerer’s curse. Her three devoted cats did the spinning for her. A cats' purr is an echo of the hum of the spinning wheel. In England, black cats are considered lucky and white cats unlucky. In America it is the other way; black cats are unlucky and white cats are the bringers of good fortune. In England if a black cat crosses your path you haven't offended the witch and she's passed you by (the cat either belongs to a witch or is a disguised witch), but in America the black cat's association with witches makes it a target for abuse not a good luck symbol. If it crossed your path from the left it brought ill luck, but if it crossed from the right it brought good fortune.

Cats For Luck

In Russia, blue cats were often thought lucky while in Japan tortoiseshell-and-white ('mi-ke') is luckiest and tortoiseshell cats, especially tortie tomcats, are lucky for sailors wanting fair weather. Tri-colored cats are also lucky in Canada, but naughty-torties are reputed to be troublesome in England. In Japan, a black spot on a cat means the cat contains the soul of a departed ancestor. In Britain the black cat is considered to be a symbol of good luck and some people consider white cats to be unlucky, though "unlucky white cats" is not a widespread belief in Britain. In the US, white cats are lucky while black cats are unlucky and some shelters claim it is harder to re-home black cats because of the association with bad luck.

In many countries cats are said to foretell the weather. In Indonesia cats are thought to control the rain. Pour water on a cat and it will summon rain. Even today, the cloud-gray Korat is ceremonially sprinkled with water to bring rain for the crops.

In China, the older and uglier a cat, the luckier it is. This is self-explanatory as pets are forbidden and, according to a Chinese houseguest, his people traditionally eat "anything with legs except the table."

In parts of northern Europe a cat which enters a house of its own volition brings good luck with it. In Russia, couples make sure a cat moves into their new home with them to bring good fortune. In Japan, a cat waved a forepaw to beckon a lord into a building, saving him from a lightning bolt and the beckoning cat is still used as a good luck charm. According to Buddhists dark colored cats attracted gold and light colored cats brought silver.

In Abyssinia an unmarried girl who kept a cat was a wealthy catch. In rural areas of England it was believed unwise for a pregnant woman to let a cat sleep on her lap as the baby would be born with the face of a cat.

Tail-Piece

Cats show tremendous variation in tail length with bobtail mutations, kinks and curls having occurred in Asia, the Isle of Man, America and possibly in Russia.

Siamese palace and temple cats helped guard precious treasure. So diligent were they that their eyes became crossed from staring at the objects they were guarding. Their kinked tails came about when a Princess put her rings on a cat's tail while she bathed. The cat knotted its tail round the rings for extra security hence the kinked tails of early Siamese cats.

The Manx lost its tail when boarding the ark and the door closed on its tail. Others say that cat-tails were used to decorate spears and helmets so mother cats bit off their kittens tails at birth. Sadly there is a modern day version of this tale. On some Greek islands kittens risk being caught and killed and their tails turned into souvenir key rings.

In Bali you stop a new kitten from straying by cutting off its tail and burying it by the door. Cats in Bali grew wise to this trick which is why cats in parts of Malaysia and in Japan only have bobbed tails. Of course, in England you just smear their paws with butter to stop them running off.

Foot-Note

There aren't many superstitions about cats' feet. Polydactyl cats are also believed lucky by many people, especially by the early sailors traveling to America which is why there are now so many polydactyl cats in New England. They sailed across from Europe and jumped ship in the New World, leading to a high concentration of genes for polydactyly.

The belief isn't restricted to those sailors. "Six-finger cats" are also lucky for Malaysian households. Although some American writers and breeders have stated that polydactyls are only found in America, in actual fact they are common in Britain, fairly common in mainland Europe and not uncommon in Asia.

End Piece

I've mentioned only a few variations of the more common feline folktales. There are hundreds more folktales, legends and regional variations on these tales. There are also modern-day Urban Myths involving cats. Like the older legends, some Urban Myths are malign and others benign reflecting the cat's continuing association with both good and evil forces.

Who's Who in World Mythology : Asura
For past articles and the bibliography, please go to the
Who’s Who Archive.

When the Hindus arrived in India, they battled the Naga for control of the land. Naga is also the Indian name for Cobra, and the Naga were thought to be shape shifters as well as Serpent worshippers. Both in their eventual defeat and withdrawal to the underworld and in their abilities, they resemble the stories of the Tuatha de Danann of Ireland.

Asura is the name applied to the ruling families of the Naga civilizations in the Vedas. The Asura fought under the Serpent banner and held the title Supreme Lord of Bhagavati, showing their descent from the Naga Rajas of Patala. Brahmans described their culture as one of wealth and luxury. They were versatile in magic, with superior architectural and medical skills. They were said to be able to restore life to the dead. The Asura families included the Daityas, the Danavas, the Dasyus, and Vritra who were destroyed by Indra.

There are three varieties of Nagi, and of these, two prefer land and the last prefers water. The most unpleasant are the black Nagi. They are black with crimson bands of color. Living in ruins, caves, and unpleasant areas, they are not at all friendly. The green Nagi are much more friendly. These are normally green-gold with silver triangles on their back and golden eyes. According to mythology, they acted as wise guardians of treasure and sacred places. Both varieties can spit poison, but the black Nagi will do it with far less provocation. The water Nagi are the most colorful. Described as emerald green to turquoise with deep brown and pale jade to dark gray and olive patterns, their eyes are pale green to amber in color. Their saliva is also poisonous, but they preferred the use of magic.

In addition to their coloring, the Naga can appear in many different forms. The two most common are as serpents with one to four heads or like the Greek lamia and the Celtic banshee, human from the waist up (sometimes with an 'ox-like' horned head) and a serpent from the waist down. Nagi can also appear as humans, snakes, or winged sea dragons. The female, Nagina, appears most often as a human.

The Nagi are very dangerous and testy beings who are quite judgemental and easily offended. Descendants of the goddess Kandru and Kasyapa, some sources said they had once lived on the surface of the earth, but Brahma sent them to live in the underworld as they became too numerous. Their underground kingdom, possibly located under the Himilayas, is Patala-Ioka or Naga-Ioga, governed by their ruler Mucalinda. This is a kingdom filled with jewel-encrusted palaces, feasts, and dancing. Scholarly discussions are common in their kingdom. Among their other treasures, they possess charms which could bestow supernatural vision or hearing upon their owners. They can also bestow invisibility on people when they enter water. All Nagi were thought to have a precious gem in their throat or forehead which imbued them with power. Female nagini were all beautiful, clever princesses, and many families in India eagerly claimed a naga ancestor. Unless provoked, the good nagi will usually only attack humans who are evil or destined to die prematurely. Worshiped in many areas during droughts, they were often present near wells, lakes, and rivers. Their only hereditary enemy is a race known as the Garudas, a breed of shape shifting birdmen.

The Magi's Garden: Bloodroot
For past featured foliage and the bibliography, please go to the
The Magi’s Garden Archive.

Bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis)

Folk Names: Coon Root, Indian Paint, Indian Plant, Indian Red Plant, King Root, Paucon, Pauson, Red Paint Root, Red Puccoon, Red Root, Sanguinaria, Snakebite, Sweet Slumber, Tetterwort, Yellow Puccoon

Description: Bloodroot is a small perennial growing up to six inches. It does best sheltered along wet banks, in fields, and in shady woods with rich soils and heavy leaf mould. The herb is indigenous to Northeast America, found from Quebec to Florida to Texas, Kansas, Arkansas, and Nebraska. The finger-thick rhizome root contains orange-red juice when fresh, while the dried root is yellow inside and brown outside. Its taste is bitter and harsh. The bloodroot produces solitary, pale-green, basal leaves from each bud on the root. When it first appears, the leaf is grayish-green and downy, and wrapped around the flower bud. The veined leaves are cordate or reniform, and palmate with five to nine lobes. Each leaf is paired with a solitary, naked flower stem each shorter than the footstalk of the leaf. The waxy flower is white with between eight and twelve petals in two or more whorls with golden stamens. It is one of the earliest and most beautiful spring flowers, closing at night or on cloudy days.. The seed is an oblong, narrow pod approximately one inch long.

Effects: strong
Planet: Mars, Jupiter
Element: Fire
Associated Deities:

Traditions:
This plant is endangered in some states, so be sure of your state laws before you harvest it. The darkest red roots are considered the strongest. Should you be using a spell recipe that calls for blood, bloodroot has successfully been used as a substitute. This substitute is usually referred to as Diabolic Wine. Add a pinch of powdered bloodroot to any dark red wine. Mix well and leave overnight covered with a red cloth. Before use, pass your wand or palm over the container three times saying each time:

You are not wine but blood,
Living blood, Scarlet blood,
Living scarlet blood of mine.

Magic:
Bloodroot may be carried or worn for love. It is also carried to avert evil spells and negativity. This is particularly effective when carried in bag with a blue stone as protection from evil spells. Place it near doors and windows to protect the home, or sprinkle it near doors and windows to block entry of evil or hexes. To turn a spell back on its caster, throw a piece of bloodroot onto his or her doorstep.

Known Combinations:
none noted

Medical Indications: (Caution: While large doses are mildly sedative, an overdose of bloodroot is fatal. Though used in very small dosages, primarily as an expectorant, both the juice and root are extremely caustic and can destroy any tissue to which they are applied. In toxic doses, poisoning causes symptoms of intense thirst, a burning stomach, vomiting, faintness, vertigo, and dimness of eyesight.)
Parts Used : roots (collected in autumn after the leaves die down; must be stored in a dry place or it deteriorates quickly)
Bloodroot is a diuretic, emetic, emmenagogue, escharotic, expectorant, febrifuge, sedative, stimulant, tonic, purgative. Due to its dangerous indications however, it is not recommended for internal use, and external use should be closely monitored. The juice or powder has been used in poultices for swellings, aches, joints, fungoid tumors, ringworm, warts, sores, and eczema. The dried, powdered root was once used as snuff for polyps in the nose. Some Native Americans used the juice to paint over swellings and aches in their joints.

Nutrition:
none

Mercantile Uses:
The roots produce a permanent reddish-orange dye with alum. Bloodroot is often cultivated in gardens, both in North America and in Europe.

Poem : Rain
by Konstantin Vanshenkin (b. 1925)

It rattles dully on the roof,
Noiselessly streams down the pane,
Mutters in the tub in the corner,
Seethes in the concrete drain.

In the dark of night it sighs above
The field, rustles over leaves. . .

Were I happy with myself,
How well I would sleep.

Anyolite is composed of ruby and hornblende crystals embedded in green zoisite. Though anyolite increases awareness of your own individuality, it does not do so at the cost of your connection to the rest of humanity. It is useful in augmenting all altered forms of consciousness and amplifying or activating psychical abilities. Healers in Asiatic countries have put anyolite to use in both diagnosing illness and communication with helpful spirits.

Humor : The Good Cat
One day a cat dies of natural causes and goes to Heaven. There he meets God himself. The Lord says to the cat, "You lived a good life and if there is any way I can make your stay in Heaven more comfortable, please let me know."

The cat thinks for a moment and says, Lord, all my life I lived with a poor family and had to sleep on a hard wooden floor." The Lord stops the cat and says, "Say no more, " and a wonderful pillow appears.

A few days later, six mice are killed in a tragic farm accident and go to heaven. Again the Lord is there to greet them with the same offer. The mice answer, "All of our lives we have been chased. We have had to run from cats, dogs, and even women with brooms. Running, running, running; we're tired of running. Do you think we could have roller skates so we don't have to run anymore?

The Lord says, "Say no more," and fits each mouse with new roller skates. About a week later the Lord stops by to see the cat and finds him in a deep sleep on the pillow. The Lord gently wakes the cat and asks him," How are things since you arrived?

The cat stretches and yawns and replies," It is wonderful here. Better than I could have expected. And those Meals on Wheels you've been sending by are theeeeeeee best!!!!

A Dreamer's Guide : Label to Lake

For past articles and the bibliography, please go to the
Dreamer's Guide Archive.

If you dreamt of a Label, you will let an enemy see into your private affairs, much to your detriment. Labels on boxes, trunks, or luggage predict an unexpected trip or visitor. If you put a label on a package, expect a surprise.

Labor Day is a symbol of domestic contentment. If you were in a parade, great joy lies ahead. If you were at work on Labor Day, you will receive a great deal of money.

Labor Pains are a sign of success, but only after hard work.

Domestic animals Laboring under heavy burdens denotes prosperity at the cost of humane treatment of those under you. Men at work indicate profitable work and good health. It is a favorable omen for any new enterprise or crop if you were hard at work yourself.

Being in a Laboratory predicts wasted efforts on unfruitful enterprises when you might achieve success in more practical plans. Be careful of new business ventures if you saw people at work in a lab. If you thought of yourself as an alchemist, trying to transform lead to gold, you will have high goals and interesting projects, but you will fall far from your aim.

A Laburnum tree in bloom foretells freedom from adverse influences around you through the application of intelligent action. If you saw others handling the tree, you are being deceived.

Business will be perplexing and intricate after a dream of a Labyrinth. Loved ones will prove intolerable and ill tempered. If you were in a maze at night or in darkness, you will have a passing brush with illness or trouble. A labyrinth of green vines and trees foretells happiness where you formerly saw only despair and loss. A labyrinth of railroad tracks indicates a long and tedious journey. Though you will meet interesting people, you will not meet with financial success. If you found your way through a maze or were not worried about being in one, you can expect to solve your problems with a minimum of effort.

Lace promises the realization of your most ambitious desires. On a loved one, lace indicates fidelity and possibly a rise in position. Buying lace means you will run an expensive establishment and retain much financial gain from it, but selling it is a sign that you desires will outstrip your ability and resources. Making lace presages an attractive and well to do mate, but while fixing lace to a wedding gown foretells many admirers, a marriage will not occur for some time. Lace curtains are a warning against a tendency toward preoccupation with passing pleasures.

Avoid rivals if you thought you had a Lackey. You will have good earnings if your lackey waited on you or relatives, but if he or she waited on others, friends are trying to cause you harm.

If a Ladder was raised for you so you could ascend to some height, your energy and nerve will help you rise to prominence in business. Climbing a ladder in general indicates prosperity and happiness, especially if you used it to escape from captivity, though you may face many perils along the way. If you ascended a ladder and became dizzy, you will not wear your honors easily and likely to become haughty and domineering. Falling from a ladder denotes depression and lack of success, and a broken ladder indicates failure in every venue. If a rung broken out from under you, you will achieve financial success but not of the quality you expected. You will be disappointed in love and business if you descended a ladder. Walking under a ladder in you dream is a sign of good luck. If you carried a ladder, you will come to the rescue of a relative or close friend.

You will be fortunate in your choice of companionship if you dreamt of a Ladle, and children will be a source of happiness. A broken or dirty ladle indicates a grievous loss.

Gossip is coming from your home if you dreamt of a Lady, and several ladies indicate slander. A beautiful lady is a sign of weakness. If the lady had beautiful, long hair, you will have happiness, but long brown hair is a harbinger of sickness. A lady of court is a symbol of vanity. You will have many friends if you were a maid of honor.

Easy success in most endeavors is predicted by the Ladybug.

A Lagoon warns of a descent into a morass of doubt and confusion.

A Lair is a prediction of coming trouble. If an animal was present, you will succeed in overcoming the problem.

Your image reflected upon a clear Lake is a promise of joy and good friends. Foliage and trees reflected in a lake means you will have your fill of love and happiness. A clear lake surrounded by a bleak and barren landscape is an indication of a profitable life marred by immorality. A muddy lake enclosed by bleak rocks and bare trees denotes an unhappy end in business or love, but if the trees were green, you will eventually turn yourself around. If you were alone on a turbulent and muddy lake, you will have cause to regret extravagances. If water was in the boat, but you reached safety, despite a stint of bad judgment, you will eventually reach the proper state of mind for honor and distinction. You will overcome worries with patience if rain was falling on a lake.

Sailing on a clear, smooth lake means much happiness and sufficient wealth. Wading into a lake is a sign of unnecessary worries, while fishing indicates advancement within your position. If slimy, otherworldly entities rose from a lake to harass you, you face failure and ill health through ill-spent time and pleasures.
