The Pagan Month of July
can be found in its entirety Here. For more detailed entries, please visit the full calendar.

July was named for Julius Caesar who reorganized the previously skewed calendar to what is now called the Julian calendar. Instituted in 26 BC, this was known as the Year of Confusion because of the irritation switching the calendar caused. This was the calendar of the west for the next 1600 years. July is sacred to Apt (or Apet), Athena, Sothis, Spider Woman, and Rosea.

The Irish name for this month was Iúil or an t-Iuchar, the border time. Traditionally during the last two weeks of July and the first two weeks of August, Sirius, the dog star, can be seen in the sky. The Anglo-Saxon name was Aeftera Litha, "after Litha," or sometimes Maedmonat, "meadow month." Hewimanoth, "hay month," was the Frankish name, and the Asatru call it Haymoon.

The first Full Moon is called the Buck Moon. It is also the Blessing or Wort Moon and the Honey Moon, a name it shares with June’s Moon. It is also called the Moon of Claiming, Fallow Moon, Thunder Moon, a name shared with August, and Moon of Blood (due to mosquitoes), a name it share with October.

The sun passes from Cancer to Leo on July 23rd. The birth flower for July is the larkspur. Onyx, sardonyx, carnelian, turquoise or rubies are the stones listed for those born in July. The birthstone of Cancer is the moonstone or pearl, while Leo’s stone is the ruby, onyx, or smoky quartz. Albite, chrysoprase, emerald, green tourmaline, opal, pink tourmaline, and rhodochrosite are also significant to Cancers, and amber, carnelian, chrysocolla, citrine, fire agate, garnet, pink tourmaline, ruby, and topaz are associated with Leo.

Lunar Holy Days

The seventh of the seventh moon is the Chhit Sek or Chilsuk, a Chinese holiday honoring the meeting of the Heavenly Spinning Lady (the star Vega) and her lover, the Cowherd (the star Altair). (See also July 7th)

The last Sunday in July is the Procession of Witches in Beselare, Belgium.

Humor: Practice What you Preach
A woman pulled up to a red light behind one other car. She noticed the driver of the car in front of her was talking on his cell phone and appeared to be shuffling through some papers on the seat beside him.

When the light turned green, the man didn’t notice. Waiting a moment, the woman then began pounding on her steering wheel and yelling at the man to move, but the man was too involved in his conversation to notice. The woman was going ballistic inside her car, ranting and raving at the man, pounding on her steering wheel and dash.

The light turned yellow, and the woman held down her car horn, screaming curses at the man. The man hearing the commotion, looked up, saw the yellow light and accelerated through the intersection just as the light turned red.

The woman was beside herself with fury, screaming in frustration as she missed her chance to get through the intersection. As she was still in mid-rant, she heard a tap on her window and looked up into the barrel of a gun held by a very serious looking policeman.

The policeman quietly told her to shut off her engine while keeping both hands in sight. She complied, speechless at what was happening. The policeman then ordered her to exit her car with her hands up. She got out of the car, and he ordered her to turn and place her hands on the car. Turning, she placed her hands on the car roof and was then quickly cuffed and hustled into the waiting patrol car. Too bewildered by the chain of events to ask any questions, she was driven to the police station where she was fingerprinted, photographed, searched, booked and placed in a cell.

After a couple of hours a policeman approached the cell and opened the door for her. She was escorted back to the booking desk where the original officer was waiting with her personal effects.

Handing her the bag containing her things, and said, "I'm really very sorry for this mistake, but you see, I pulled up behind your car while you were blowing your horn and cussing a blue streak at the person in the car in front of you. And then I noticed the "Choose Life" license plate holder and the "Follow Me to Sunday School" bumper sticker and the chrome plated Christian fish emblem on the trunk so naturally I assumed you had stolen the car."

Article : Bird Folklore
from MYSTIC'S MENAGERIE
For more information on birds and other animals, check out the Mystical World Wide Web Site

The bird is an animal almost universally exalted and accepted as symbolically being associated with the soul, as a messenger of the gods, a carriers of souls, an oracle or seen to possess the spirit of loved ones whilst also being a symbol of good or evil. The Ancient Greeks actually developed a science from the study of birds and their activities called 'Ornithomancy' and since then, birds have continued to feature heavily in folklore across the world even in the 20th-century imagination. It is no surprise that the modern Western super hero 'Superman' has the special ability to fly and is also given a name that indicates supreme powers. Perhaps this is because man has long wanted to be able to fly. Take the story of 'Icarus' as just one such further example.

In folklore birds are seen to possess the ability to talk offering guidance to humans. Carl G. Jung, the psychiatrist, (See Mystical WWW Philosophy), said that birds represented the inner spirit of a person and that birds were seen to be associated with angels, flights of fancy and the supernatural.

The Egyptians associated birds with the soul or 'ba', and the hawk specifically with the soul of 'Horus' and the pharaoh. Some Native American beliefs see the birds as personifications of the rain and the wind. Shamans are known for transforming into the shape of birds to be able to leave the body and soar up into the universe. The patron god of the ancient Aztec civilization was 'Huitzilopochtli'. The Aztecs believed that the dead were reborn as 'Colibris' which were the birds of their patron god, and hence held all birds in high esteem.

The Devil or 'Old Nick', and negative forces, are often said to be disturbed and attracted by the loud chattering of birds. At the very least such attentions can be seen in weather changes if the noise continues. One of the most common signs of such negative omens relate to birds flying in and out of rooms/windows. This action is seen as a sign of an imminent death, whilst the flight or hovering of a bird around a house or the tapping against a window are seen to indicate negative forces and perhaps death is close. Australian, Irish and Brazilian traditions indicate that the sight of black or gray birds flying at night contain the souls of those who were recognized as harbingers of evil.

The fact that the birds fly at night (or have either black plumage or disturbing cries) is not the only reason why birds are seen to be connected with evil, but also because birds will not settle at any time if influenced by such energies due to the belief that the birds/souls are completing their penance before being able to progress forward to salvation. Any bird that flies at night is commonly seen to be associated with negative or evil forces.

In France it is traditionally believed that birds are seen to carry the souls of unbaptised children who have died and awaiting baptism in the hope of salvation and redemption, and the opportunity to progress onwards. Until the souls have been baptized by 'John the Baptist' it was believed the children would remain as birds. In Scotland (UK) it is said that should a caged bird die that belongs to someone in the family on a wedding day it is very likely that the marriage will not be a happy one. Should the wedding go ahead the couple may eventually separate. In Shropshire (UK) flocks of birds made up of types such as curlews or plovers were traditionally called 'Seven Whistlers' thought to warn of impending disaster. So called as the flock was usually searching for the seventh bird. Yet if the seventh was found it was thought that the world would end immediately. It was also thought that these birds carried the grief-stricken souls of unbaptised babies who were condemned to roam the skies or the souls of drowned sailors who provided warnings to their shipmates.

A long held almost universal belief regarding the direction of the flight of a flock of birds indicates that you should take particular heed if you about to set out on a journey. If the birds are flying to the right then all will be well, to the left and you should change your plans. The mysterious sights and sounds of birds have long captured the observer's imagination. Here is just one such example;

Scottish Gaelic Traditional Verse

'I heard the cuckoo with no food in my stomach,
I heard the stock-dove on top of the tree,
I heard the sweet singer in the copse beyond,
And I heard the screech of the owl in the night.
I saw the wheatear on the dyke of holes,
I saw the snipe while sitting bent,
And I foresaw the year would not go well with me.'

'Valentine's Day', 14 February, is associated with birds and all those in love, being named after the patron saint of lovers. St. Valentine was a young priest who defied the edict that prohibited young men from marrying as he believed that marriage had a poor effect on men changing them into poor soldiers. In America and England (UK) it is said that a young girl is able to tell what sort of man she will marry by the first bird she sees on this day. If a young girl sees a hen and a cockerel together at the same time on this day, it indicates that she will marry the next year. The following mystical birds are traditionally identified with St. Valentine's Day

Blackbird - Clergyman or priest, spiritual
Robin Redbreast - Sailor, nautical
Goldfinch (any yellow bird) - A rich man
Sparrow - Farmer, agricultural
Bluebird - A happy man
Crossbill - An argumentative man
Dove - A good man
Woodpecker - No husband

Nests

A European tradition indicates that nests made from human hair mean that the unfortunate unknowing donor will continue to suffer with headaches until the nest is destroyed, so old hair should be disposed of carefully. Certain birds nesting on or near the house are seen to be the harbingers of good fortune such as the blackbird (despite its confusing reputation) and the stork. In Austria the person will also, it is said, suffer with skin complaints and boils if human hair is used for a nest!

Feather Beds

Wonderfully comfortable to sleep on but not if you have turned the mattress over on a Sunday. This, it is said, will leave you having a restless week of interrupted sleep with bad dreams every night. In fact people from Devon (UK) believe that doing so will invite death as a visitor to the house.

The feather bed is also disliked intensely in the North of England (UK) where it seems that no-one can be at rest in such a bed. Those that are dying will die unhappy and often in pain if not removed from it. This applies particularly to any bed made of pigeon or game bird feathers.

Craft of the Week : Bird Toys

Like many other pets, birds like to play and be entertained. Here are a few ideas for keeping your feathered friends happy. One of the best suggestions is to give your bird a "toy box" with lots of toy parts and foot toys. You can use a plain wicker basket with a handle hung over a large perch in the middle of the cage, or you may have some extra food dishes that hold small toys and toy parts. You can pick up baskets quite cheaply at any craft store and sometimes at yard sales and flea markets.

The Toy box should be inspected daily. Clean it (and the cage floor) every night. Everything should be inspected and dirty items cleaned. Refill the basket completely to the top and put it back in the cage in the morning. Keep the basket pretty close to the bottom of the cage. Birds like to chew and may chew through the handle (while sitting in the basket) until they learn better. You can try wrapping the handle with rope at first to slow the wear on the handle. Depending on the size and weight of your bird and the basket, you may want to tie the basket to the perch (doubled laces or rope work well). That way the basket won't flip over if your bird climbs on the handle.

Homemade Toys

Bird toys are simple and cheap to make at home so long as you are wary of sharp edges and other safety hazards. If you happen to work in retail or in any job where you work a register, you know that the receipt paper is seldom all used up. Instead of throwing the old roll away when there’s some left, make it into a bird toy instead by running a string through it. Your bird will enjoy unraveling it.

Tie a pinecone to a string and attach it to the cage, or take stainless steel bolts, washers, and wing nuts and thread them through a plastic chain. Thread beads or rings on the bolts too for more color. Birds like colorful toys.

Clean shredded paper, string, and colorful bits of cloth may be stuffed in a Kleenex box and tied to the side of the cage. It may be a nesting instinct, but many birds like to pull at string and fluff. You can hide a peanut or other treat inside for added fun. You may also try placing a toy or treat in a box for your bird to “find,” or wrap toy parts or treats in clean, dried corn husks (tamale wrappers) and tie the ends with cotton rope or leather laces.

Foot toy "rattles" may be created from beads, rings, and rope or leather lace. A plastic chain can be hung with toy parts (beads, rings, pacifiers, wood, etc.) tied to it. Take a small bundle of twigs and tie them together and hang in the cage.

For fun and exercise, birds also enjoy climbing on people and using them as play-gyms, visiting other rooms in the house, and some like to hop up and down the stairs.

If your bird is a feather-picker, try giving it something else to pick. Take feathers from a feather duster. Glue them on a clamp, and place it in their cage. You can try coloring the feathers with Cake Food Color. Just add a one-ounce jar of color to one quart of hot water. You can also use natural food coloring:

Red - beet juice
Blue - juice from canned blueberries
Yellow - boil onion skins (brown paper portion) in a small pan with water and a teaspoon of white vinegar. Let stand (cold) overnight.
Green - mix blue and yellow
Purple - mix red and blue

These colors have sugar in them. If you make them in quantity, store and use carefully to avoid spoilage.

Humor : Why Nature Created Menopause
With all the new technology regarding fertility, a 65 year-old woman gave birth to a baby. When she was discharged from the hospital and went home, her relatives quickly gathered at her home.

"May we see the new baby?" one asked excitedly.

"Not yet…" said the 65 year-old mother, "Soon."

Thirty minutes passed, and another relative asked, "May we see the baby now?"

"Not yet," said the new mother.

After another few minutes had elapsed, they asked again. "May we see the baby now?"

"No," replied the mother.

Growing impatient, they asked, "Well, when CAN we see the baby?"

"When it cries," she told them.

"When it cries?" they demanded. "Why do we have to wait until it cries?"

"Because, I forgot where I put it."

In Nordic mythology, Asynjor (fem. of Aesir) is applied to the Norse goddesses, and Frigg, wife of Odin, is their leader. Also among the Asynjor are the Valkyries and the Norns.

The word Asynjor (Asynjur) is also applied to the attendants of either Freya or Frigg (Frigga) at Vingolf, the Hall of the Goddesses. One of them, a healer, was called Eir. Others were named Fjorgyn, Frimia, Fimila, Hnossa the beautiful.

The Magi's Garden: Blueberry
For past featured foliage and the bibliography, please go to the

Blueberry (Vaccinium frondosum, V. ovatum, V. angustifolium, V. caespitosum, V myrtillus)

Folk Names: (V. ovatum) Box Blueberry, (V. angustifolium) Low Bush Blueberry, (V. caespitosum) Dwarf Bilberry, (V. myrtillus) Airelle, Bilberry, Black Whortles, Bleaberry (Scottish – bluish-berry), Bollebar (Danish – dark berry), Bulberry, Huckleberry, Hurtleberry, Hurts, Trackleberry, Whinberry, Whortleberry

Description: Blueberries are edible members of the heath family. They prefer acidic soil and plenty of sunlight and do best on high ground. Blueberries are found throughout Europe, and in North America from Arctic and subarctic Canada through the US. The typical blueberry is a small, branched bush or shrub with wiry, angular branches. It is rarely more than a foot high and is covered in simple, leathery, alternate leaves with smooth margins. The leaves grow in a rosy color at first, deepening to a yellow-green, and finally turning red in the autumn. The flowers are white to pink and tightly clustered. The berry appears from early summer to early autumn in twos and threes at the bases of the leaves. It is typically blue-black with a puckered indentation at top, though some are bright red and even white in certain species. The berries are filled with numerous soft, edible seeds.

Effects:
Planet: Jupiter, Pluto
Element:
Associated Deities:

Traditions:
Lammas, Lughnasadh

Magic:
To keep evil and undesirables away from your property or from entering home, place blueberries under your doormat. Blueberries are also useful for warding off psychic attack when prepared in a pie or tart. They create confusion and strife if tossed at the doorway or in the path of your enemy.

Known Combinations:
none noted

Medical Indications: (Caution: Blueberry interferes with iron absorption when taken internally) Parts Used: entire plant
Blueberries contain fatty acids, flavinoids, hydroquinone, loeanolic acid, ursolic acid, neomyrtillin, and tannins. The tannins from dried berries are particularly good for easing diarrhea, and the leaves are especially astringent. They are also diuretic and act as a urinary tract antiseptic. I prefer blueberry yogurt when I’m having an intestinal or urinary problem for the added benefit of the acidophilus in the yogurt.

Most recently, blueberries have been recommended to people suffering from diabetes or hypoglycemia. The berries are helpful in controlling insulin levels and so may also be eaten during times of stress and anxiety when sugar levels fluctuate. Blueberry is also known to strengthen connective tissues and reduce inflammation.

Another almost universal medical application of blueberries is for the eyes. The flavinoids in blueberries have been used for years to combat night blindness, cataracts (helping to halt or prevent macular degeneration), and glaucoma.

Nutrition:
Blueberries are one of my favorite fruits and one of the few I can eat without worrying about an allergic reaction. The fresher the blueberries, the better they will taste. They may be used in jams, pies, preserves, cakes, and jellies. I love blueberries in my yogurt and a good blueberry pie beats out all others in my eyes. Due to the large amount of juice contained in blueberries, you need only add a half pound of sugar to a pound of berries when making preserves.
The leaves have been added to teas.

Mercantile Uses:
In addition to the tasty berries, the color variation blueberry leaves go through make them a popular ornamental plant to have in the garden. The fruit of most blueberry plants may be used to make rose, pink, or purple dyes. The fruit of V myrtillus requires a mordant to set the dye into cloth. During WWII, when dye imports from Germany were restricted in England, blueberries were eagerly sought by the dye manufacturers.

Poem : Save Us, The Poets, Save Us
Bulat Okudzhava (b. 1924)

Save us, the poets, save us, we have but
A century, a half, a year, a week,
An hour, three minutes, two, no time at all…
Save us, but remember – save us all.

Save us with our sins, or without…
Somewhere fine, young Dantes wander out.
No time to let the past damnation fade
Before the call to take his gun and load.

Somewhere our Martynov weeps, recalling blood,
Already he has killed, he wants no more,
But this fate, the bullet will cast.
And thus the twentieth century calls to him.

Save us while you still possibly can,
But not so that we can lie down as bones.
And not as huntsmen preserve their hounds,
And not as the tsar preserves his huntsmen.

Rescue us from the hands of idiots,
From ludicrous pronouncements, blind amours;
Poetry through all time will sing your praises
If you will only save us, the poets, save us.

The Power of Stones : Apatite
For past articles and the bibliography, please go to the
Power of Stones Archive.

Calcium, strontium, lead, and sodium together with potassium-fluorine-chlorine-hydroxyl phosphate form apatite. This chemically complex substance is a major constituent of mammalian teeth and bones, forming sixty-five percent of ivory, the rest being largely collagen. It is put to use in the manufacture of phosphate fertilizers. Apatite crystals may be violet, pink, blue, brown, gray, yellow, or colorless. A yellowish-green shade is its most usual color, which has earned it the name “asparagus stone.” The name apatite comes from a Greek word meaning to deceive in allusion to its similarity to other more valuable minerals such as olivine, peridot and beryl. Another variety, a blue-green sample, is called moroxite in Norway. Though apatite is sometimes cut and faceted into talismanic gemstones, it is usually considered too soft to be used as jewelry.

Aloofness and negativity are dissolved by apatite to allow expression of your spiritual and emotional strengths. Apatite is useful when attempting to unify the energies of more than one stone, or emotional, intellectual, physical, and spiritual forms. The development of clairvoyance, clairaudience, clairsentience, and awareness of nature spirits is enhanced by apatite. It has been put to use in contacting extraterrestrial intelligences, enhancing telepathy, and encouraging past life recall.

Humor : Word Association
A minister decided to something a little different one Sunday Morning. He announced, "Today, in church, I am going to say a single word and you are going to help me preach. "Whatever single word I say, I want you to sing whatever hymn comes to your mind.

The pastor shouted out, "Cross..." Immediately the congregation started singing in unison, "The Old Rugged Cross."

The pastor hollered out, "Grace…" and the congregation began to sing "Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound."

When the pastor said, "Power," the congregation sang "There is Power in the Blood."

Then the Pastor said, "Sex."

The congregation fell in total silence. Everyone was in shock. They all nervously began to look around at each other, afraid to say anything.

Then all of a sudden, way from in the back of the church, a little old 87-year-old grandmother stood up and began to sing "Precious Memories."

A Dreamer's Guide : Lard to Lazy

For past articles and the bibliography, please go to the
Dreamer's Guide Archive.

You will triumph over your enemies or you will have a rise in fortune if you dreamt of Lard or bought it, but if you cut lard, you will lose someone dear to you. You love money too much if you ate lard.

A dream of a Larder means someone is enjoying what you sought. If you stock a larder, you will have family quarrels. Luck and prosperity is foretold by a full larder, while an empty larder means a mystery will be solved.

A Lark indicates a long life, and if it sang happily, you have one loyal friend. Larks in flight denote high aims, which will allow you to better yourself. If they landed on you, fortune will smile on you. A lark in a cage is a sign of failure, and a dead lark means someone is trying to do you harm.

Laryngitis is a warning not to gamble or take unnecessary risk.

If you were Lashed, avoid rivals; while lashing someone else means a loved one will cause you trouble. If several people were whipped, you are doomed to disappointment. You will recover from an illness if your enemies were flogged.

Swinging a Lasso well is a good omen for love, but if it got tangled or you were caught up in it, you will have an embarrassing experience.

You will respond unkindly to urgent please for help if you dreamt of a Latch. A broken one means disagreements with your best friend or sickness.

You opinions will be sought if you were Late, but loss of money is presaged if others were not on time. You are being deceived if your friends were late, and late employees are a warning of trouble. Insurmountable obstacles stand in your way after a dream of being late to a meeting.

Contentment will be used after a dream featuring a Lathe, but if you used it, misfortune will befall your friends. If you were a lathe operator however, fortune is near at hand. Others using one means you will fall in love.

Lather signifies a solution to a pressing problems from afar.

Learning Latin is an omen of good employment. If you read it, you will triumph over enemies, but if speaking it pertains to a fall. Seeing Latin or hearing it is a portent of a period of frustration, but if you persevere, thing will eventually turn out for the best.

If you took Laudanum you are weak of character which allows others to take advantage of you. Preventing others from using it means you will try to be helpful and comforting to others.

Be careful in love if you heard someone Laughing, and if several people were laughing, beware of gossip. A rival is undermining your work if your enemies were laughing, but mirthful children are a sign of approaching money. If you laughed, you will be successful in your affairs.

A Laundry means you will be unusually happy in the company of people. Someone will do you a favor if you did your own wash, but if you washed the clothes of your love, your will not marry. If you did your laundry in a fountain, you will have joy and prosperity.

Great profits are foretold by a beautiful Laurel tree, and pleasure is indicated by a laurel plant or being surrounded by trees. If you were given a laurel, you will receive money from a relative, and picking them indicates inheritance. Laurels on the head predict an unexpected gift from a friend. Holding a laurel branch is a sign of advancement in your position. Placing a laurel on the head of your love means they will be faithful and possibly well known mate.

Lava is a portent of a more exciting social life though you may have to juggle your budget to keep up.

A trip to the Lavatory is a favorable omen for any pending business affairs or issues hanging in the balance.

A Lavender bush is a warning to take the bad actions of others with a grain of salt. A bunch of flowers means a bunch of money. If you found dried flowers among your linens, you will soon be married. You will find fortune in gambling if you dreamt of lavender perfume. Lavender colored silk is a sign of spiritual favor, and any other lavender cloth indicates success.

If you were a Law enforcement officer, you will have obstacles to overcome. If you were an attorney, you will realize your high ambitions. Serious business troubles lie ahead if you took legal action against someone, and if someone took action against you, consider your plans well before acting. If you were studying law, you will rise rapidly in any profession.

Your affairs will prosper if you dreamt of your Lawn, and if you mowed your lawn, you will receive an unexpected visitors. Sad news is one its way if you saw your lawn needed a good cutting. A long life is foretold if you watered your lawn, but you will be anxious if you walked on a lawn. Someone else’s lawn means the postponement of success, and if they were cutting it, a false friend is near. An unwelcome guest will invade if you saw children at play on a lawn, but a dog asleep on the lawn means money on its way.

People will think little of you if a man started a Lawsuit for divorce, but if a woman did, there will be happiness in the family. If you began a lawsuit, use caution in business, while appealing one means you may be cheated by friends. Avoid speculation if you won a lawsuit, but losing one is a sign of a passing illness.

If you were a Lawyer, people will think you have it made, but dealing with lawyers means many worries. You will not have good results if you hired a lawyer, while dismissing one indicates reconciliation with an enemy. A lawsuit will fail if you paid a lawyer. Speaking to a lawyer is a sign of loss of property.

Taking a Laxative means you will be called upon to perform a difficult task which will be to your eventual credit. If you gave a laxative to someone, you will find gain where you expected losses.

Trouble for those near you is presaged by a bout of Laziness, while others being lazy is a warning of trouble.
