The Pagan Month of November
can be found in its entirety Here. For more detailed entries, please visit the full calendar.
November took its name as the ninth month of the Roman calendar. As the first month of the winter quarter, November was the first month of the new year according to Celtic traditions, Samhain (La Samhna - Irish) being the first day of the new year. Cailleach had guardianship of this month.
Called Blotmonath, the month of sacrifice, by the Anglo-Saxons, the Franks called this month Herbistmanoth, " harvest month," and Fogmoon is the Asatru name. It was called Samhain or an t-Samhainn, summer's end, by the Irish, the month of the festival of Samhain.
The full moon of November is called the Beaver Moon. It is the Mourning or Frosty Moon, and it may also be referred to as the Moon When Deer Shed Antlers, the Fog Moon, or the Moon of Storms, a name it shares with February and March. Some call it the Dark Moon or Mad Moon.
Scorpio gives way to Sagittarius around November 22nd. Scorpios and other folk born in Those born to this month have the Chrysanthemum for their birth flower. November children have topaz for their stone, though one list mentions pearl as a stone for November, while the birthstone of Sagittarius is turquoise or lapis lazuli. Other stones associated with Scorpio are albite, aquamarine, emerald, garnet, green tourmaline, malachite, moonstone, obsidian, and ruby. Amethyst, azurite, labradorite, pink tourmaline, ruby, sodalite, and topaz are also linked to Sagittarius.
On the tenth day of the waning moon, Buddhists and Hindus of Nepal hold a day long festival in honor of the mother goddess Gujeswari. Devotees bring offerings to her temple built around a spring in the Katmandu Valley. They pray before a sacred water vessel made of red clay called a Kalash, and in the evening, they carry a copy of this vessel in a musical procession which winds through neighboring towns.

(Please read at your own discretion and for goodness sake don’t be eating or drinking anything when you read this!)
Bob and Martha had been married for 15 years. Every morning for 15 years, Bob woke up, farted loudly, and rolled over onto his back before getting up for work. Every morning for 15 years, Martha would say, "One of these days, you're gonna fart your guts out!" One Thanksgiving morning, as Martha prepared the turkey, she became inspired. Before her husband got out of bed, she crept upstairs and placed the turkey innards in his pajama bottoms, giggling to herself. Later that morning, Bob woke up and of course went through his typical morning ritual. Martha could hear his scream all the way downstairs and laughed to herself. She became concerned though after three hours had passed and Bob was still in the bathroom. She was about to knock on the door, when Bob opened up, pale as a ghost. Before she can say anything, he says, "You were right. You were right. I did fart my guts out, but by the grace of God and these two fingers I got them back up there again." |

Part 7: Candles
by Candace
Candle magick is one of the easiest forms of magick and the most used by novices. It requires little ritual and few tools. In fact, the tools for candle magick can be purchased just about anywhere. These so-called tools basically entail a candle and a way to light it.
You will not always want or need candles for your altar, but they are popular and are often used to draw or dispense energy in spell work. They are also used to focus during meditation, chants or prayers and provide mood and symbolism through their colors. Color is one of the languages of the soul, influencing our mood and emotions. Just look at inspired or meditative paintings. The artist has used colors and patterns of color to draw you in and inspire certain emotions or states of mind.
The style, size, and shape of your candles are based on need, cost, associations, and convenience:
* Large pillar candles are best when you need to burn the same candle continuously or relight it several times in the course of your spell. If for instance, you needed to light the candle on certain days or during certain cycles of the moon, a pillar candle would be the most obvious choice. Small pillars are easier to find and more economical than larger ones though they don’t last as long.
* Seven-day candles usually come in glass containers so they can be left unattended with ease. I’ve seen these sold in some supermarkets. They are popular to leave lit at gravesites. These are good for times when you need to leave a continuous flame for long periods of time.
* Votives and tea lights are very economical, plentiful, and can be used in a variety of holders. They also come in a variety of colors. These require less supervision than tapers and pillars.
* While tapers are plentiful, versatile, available in many shades of color, they do require close supervision. They could easily fall over and start a fire if left alone too long.
* Specially shaped candles can be poured at home into molds or purchased in various shapes. Homemade candles are the best for magickal uses because you know what has gone into them. While you can scratch symbols and whatnot into store-bought candles, and anoint them, homemade candles can be crafted from the start for a specific purpose. You can also use all natural ingredients, which in my opinion will enhance any magickal working.
* Some Pagans keep a special pair of candles to represent the God and Goddess. A black homemade candle is the preferred God representation, while a white Homemade candle represents the Goddess. Both are used for light and tool consecration.
* Candleholders serve not only to make your candles burn more safely, but also add height, shape and depth to your altar space.
The only real requirement when using candles for magickal use is that it has not previously been used in a spell. All your tools pick up vibrations as a matter of course. Using secondhand materials or equipment may disturb your workings and impair their effectiveness. You can of course cleanse the candle and trim the wick, but it is no substitute for a new candle. If you plan to reuse candle stubs to make new candles, make sure you use only stubs of candles that have not previously been used for some magickal purpose.
An often-neglected aspect of candle magick is the anointing of the candle before use. The fact that this part of their ritual use is neglected should give you some indication of how necessary it really is. That’s not to say that your spellwork wouldn’t benefit from anointing the candle before you begin your ritual, but it is not compulsory. The conscious act of anointing the candle for use before beginning your work will only add to the power of the final spell. Anointing is also a way of dispelling any negative energy clinging to the candle. If you’ve bought the candle at a store or online, do you really know where it’s been and how it was made?
The proper way to dress or anoint a candle is NOT by rubbing the oil up and down, and it is NOT done simply by drawing your oiled hand in one direction. To properly anoint a candle, you must start at the middle of the candle and draw your hand upwards. This will serve to draw the energy of the candle upward when you light it. Then starting at the middle, draw your hand down. Repeat this as many times as you feel necessary. There is no set number to do this. I feel there should be a warning also that you choose your oils carefully. A dressing of volatile oils is a fire hazard we can all do without.
Color is one of the most important parts of magick, especially candle magick. Most witches will collect an array of different colored candles to use in different spells. Each color has its own magickal meaning. These colors represent certain energies, goals, people, and non-physical beings, such as deities or spiritual forces. They have a symbolic meaning immediately recognizable to our subconscious. Colors influence the flow and amount of energy in our bodies. The ancient Egyptians utilized color in their temples for healing, while in India, color is associated with the chakras.
Some magical systems use complimentary colors together, such as red and green, to create an optical illusion that appears to flash when placed together. Such "flashing colors" are said to have great power in attracting the corresponding magical forces. These can be used in almost any type of ritual or spell work when the visual aspect of the color is important. Keep in mind that because one color can mean several things, when you are using different colors, you should "inform" each color of its purpose.
It must be said that not all colors mean the same to all persons and all cultures. The particular symbolism of any given color can vary widely from source to source. Many books offer different suggestions for colors when used in magick. In addition, there are also colors for astrological signs and planetary or elemental magic, which may be relevant to the time at which your ritual is performed.
In the end, when choosing your colors, do what seems right to you. If you do not agree with some aspect mentioned in a book, don’t use it. Going against what your heart tells you just because a book tells you to do something can only lead to the failure of your spell.

Craft of the Week: Cookie Cutter Candles and Color Correspondences
Candace
Beeswax candles made in this fashion are fast to burn because they are mostly air. They won’t last long, but they are easy and quick to make. Beeswax come in a variety of colors and is inexpensive, so making a candle in the color you need should not be a problem. Making a candle in the fashion will also give you the opportunity to make multicolored candles.
Because beeswax is not smooth, anointing this type of candle may be difficult to impossible. It’s not really necessary however, as you are making it from natural wax and it already smells wonderful. Beeswax has a very sweet odor and always makes me hungry for honey when I smell it.
sheets of beeswax
cutting board
cookie cutters
candlewick
hair dryer
Lay the sheets of beeswax individually on the cutting board. Cutting multiple pieces together will crush the fine ribs. Use your cookie cutter to cut six shapes (or more for thicker candles) from the beeswax. Sandwich the wick in the center of the wax layers, leaving 1/2 in at the top of the candle. Then press the wax shapes together. If they don't stick well enough together, heat slightly with the hair dryer to soften the wax.
The following is only a list of correspondences I have gathered. Experiment with magic and ritual and let your feelings about it determine your color choices. Feel free add to it as you discover more color attributes of your own.
White is a balance of all colors. It lends itself to spiritual enlightenment, cleansing, purification, consecration, healing, and truth seeking. Most Native American tribes consider white feminine, though the Arapaho consider it male. It is used in Rituals involving lunar energy, representing the Maiden. In Rome, women wore it as an emblem of virtue and purity. White may be substituted for any color candle.
Personality: Those attracted to white are spiritual, devoted, psychic, protective. They love open spaces and order.
Magical Uses: Always burn at least one white candle to symbolize and reinforce contact with pure spirits. White can be a replacement for any other color your magick requires.
First and foremost, white represents protection, purification and cleansing on all levels. It is the color for consecration. It provides protection against negativity by raising your vibration, breaks curses (especially with black), and is used in exorcism. In Egypt, a white amulet was used as protection from the evil eye and other supernatural perils.
White is also used in divination rituals. It enhances spiritual and psychic powers, allowing better contact with the higher self and spiritual helpers for enlightenment, truth, and strength. White improves meditation, inspiration, and clairvoyance.
Rituals for (aura) healing and (inner) peace also benefit from white. It is useful in maintaining chastity, happiness, and in halting gossip. It is a cleansing color of truth which also heals.

Black may be used in rituals to induce a deep meditative state. Black symbolizes dignity, sophistication, and the night. It attracts Saturn energy while banishing evil and negativity. Native American tribes consider black a masculine color. It is symbolic of the Underworld, and it represents death among the Cherokee.
Personality:
Someone who is attracted to black is someone who often dwells in his own dark recesses. This is the strong silent type but someone you don't want to deal with if crossed. They may be a night person, as the darkness seems to be their safe, quiet place. The black person is a loner, though by choice. Unfortunately, there is also a tendency to dwell on things, and they may suffer more bouts of depression than most others. This person tends to keep a lot of secrets.
Magical Purpose: Black can be used with RED to increase intent.
As the void of all colors, it has the ability to absorb, and this is why it is used for funerals. Though it has had many detractors through the ages, black is very protective. It is most helpful in banishing, binding, or releasing negative or evil thoughts and situations. Use it for breaking free from bad habits or addictions, uncrossing, the removal of curses, and other defensive spells. It will also remove confusion, loss, depression, sickness, sadness, and discord. In China, red was also worn by the emperor to worship the sun.

In China, red and yellow paper could ward off demons. Red amulets in Egypt were used against disease and lightning. In many cultures, a red hand painted in a harm would protect the inhabitants from harm.

Humor : Where’s Jesus? |
---|
A Sunday School teacher of preschoolers was concerned that his students might be a little confused about Jesus Christ because of the Christmas season emphasis on His birth. He wanted to make sure they understood that the birth of Jesus actually occurred a long time ago.
So he asked his class, "Where is Jesus today?" Steven raised his hand and said, "He's in heaven." Mary was called on and answered, "He's in my heart." Little Johnny, waving his hand furiously, blurted out, "I know! I know! He's in our bathroom!" The whole class got very quiet, looked at the teacher, and waited for a response. The teacher was completely at a loss for a few very long seconds. He finally gathered his wits and asked Little Johnny how he knew this. Little Johnny said, "Well...every morning, my father gets up, bangs on the bathroom door, and yells 'Jesus Christ, are you still in there?’" |
Who's Who in World Mythology : Auf
For past articles and the bibliography, please go to the
Who's Who Archive.
Auf literally means ‘corpse.’ He is a manifestation of Ra as the dead sun god during his passage through the underworld. At the end of each day, Ra would die and embark on his night journey as Auf. Unlike his Ra counterpart, Auf was depicted with a ram’s head.
Because there was no wind in the underworld, Auf had to rely on various demons and gods for help in towing his ship. He stood in his deckhouse over which the serpent Mehen coiled, warding off the dangerous Apep. Auf’s boat was crewed by the gods Hu, Saa and Wepwawet. His main job in the Underworld was to bring light to the souls of the dead as he passed through their realm. After his return to the land of the living, these souls fell back into a lonely darkness.

Poem : Annual Legend
Winfield Townley Scott (1940)
A million butterflies rose up from South America,
All together, and flew in a gold storm toward Spain;
Eastward, the annual legend, a shining amber cloud
Driven homeward as it had been and would be again
Since the conquerors searching the harder shining
Brought for the bargain a handful of wings of flame.
Balboa lies dead somewhere and Pizarro’s helmet
Is a spider’s kingdom; yet here was the arrogant breath
And the dangerous plume burning across the foreign air
That danced like an ancient Andalusian noon:
A blaze, it rose leaving the jungle dark and the leaves
Heavy with silence, and the wheeltracks folding to doom
Where majesty wandered:
A million butterflies,
Wheeling eastward from the soil where the nugget lies lost,
Turned homeward in vast diurnal fire that marched one day
Burning toward Spain; and after that, for a while,
Spread like a field of death, gold on the sea.

The Power of Stones: Azurite
For past articles and the bibliography, please go to the
Power of Stones Archive.
Azurite or chessylite is a dark blue gemstone found in the upper oxidized portions of copper deposits. The name "Azurite" comes from the Persian lazhward meaning "blue." Azurite ranges from a dark, greenish blue to a blue-black color, and varies in hardness from Agate to Turquoise. It is often found mixed with Malachite and has the same chemical composition. In time, malachite can replace azurite crystals. As some medieval painters ground it for use in their paintings, some formerly blue skies have now turned green.
Ancient Romans and Egyptians used this stone for greater insight, psychic ability, and hypnotism. According to Native American lore, it may be helpful in contacting and understanding your spirit guides. Like all stones of the copper family, azurite can calm personal stress and relax inner confusion. Like amber, it is a "rubbing stone" in that it likes to be touched in order to release its energies. Placed on the forehead at night, it has been used at night to clarify dreams. It also enhances creative energies and self-confidence.

For past articles and the bibliography, please go to the
Dreamer's Guide Archive.
You will be successful if you dreamt of a Meadow. A meadow filled with grass indicates a successful marriage, while one of hay promises pleasant friendships. If you bought a meadow, you will enjoy much hospitality.
Happiness is foretold if you were Mean. If you were mean to others, you will soon have a fight. Friends will ignore you if others were mean to you. Mean family presages a long trip.
You will let trifling matters interfere with momentous events or business engagements if you dreamt of Meals.
If you did not have sufficient Means, beware people who will blame you for damages. But if you did have sufficient means, you must also beware of poverty. Unhappiness is augured if others did not have enough money, and if they were your friends, success will be delayed. You will lose personal property if a man had more means than necessary, while a wealthy woman indicated family disaster.
Worrying will interfere with your business if you dreamt of having Measles. Love will trouble you if others suffered. If your relatives had measles, money is on its way, and children afflicted with measles are a sign of happiness.
Commercial gain is promised by the act of Measuring. If you measured something for cooking, be careful, and measuring clothes is a warning against your enemies. If you measured your home, be careful not to lose what you have saved. Measuring your own body is an omen of abundance. Good times are foretold by measuring the temperature.
Meat is a sign of happiness, unless it was boiled, in which case, there will be sorrow. Broiled or roasted meat means good times are ahead. You will be well paid to destroy someone if you saw fried meat. Raw meat indicates you will soon receive news of the death of a friend, but if you ate it, you will be wealthy.
Veal means you will cheat someone, and beef promises an easy life. Pork means you will be very fortunate, and lamb foretells happiness. You will have worries if you saw deer meat, while the flesh of birds or foul indicates you will collect money. You will have many troubles if it was any other kind of meat.
Buying meat means you will gain money through gambling. Danger is very close if you threw meat away. An inheritance is indicated if you cut raw meat, and cutting cooked meat foretells financial gain. A change in your surroundings is presaged if you prepared meat for yourself, while cooking for others is a sign of misfortune in love.
More active business and possibly a change in residence is foretold by a Mechanic. Perhaps you will get a raise.
Present peril will leave you untouched if you dreamt of a Medal, while wearing them is a symbol of merry times ahead. There is danger in love if someone else wore medals, but if they were army or navy personnel, you will gain financially. Losing a medal is a sign of misfortune through the unfaithfulness of others.
You will have big joy but little profit if you saw a Medicine chest. Your troubles are not as serious as your believe if you had to take medicine. Perseverance is the key. If the medicine tastes good, all your troubles will ultimately end in your favor. If the medicine was bitter, you will attempt to injure someone who trusts you. Your friends will be happy if you had to give them medicine in your dream, but hard work lies ahead if you dosed children. Be cautious in all your dealings if you medicated relatives.
A map of the Mediterranean Sea is a warning of sorrow. Traveling to the Mediterranean means good times are coming, and if you visited coastal towns along this sea, you will have prosperity. Financial gain is foretold by a return from the Mediterranean.
A Medlar tree is an omen of good earnings and a pleasant life. Eating the fruit indicates the end of pleasure and the beginning of trouble, unless you ate with others. In that case, you will enjoy favorable events. You will encounter pleasant circumstances if you bought Medlar fruit.
