The Victorian Language of Flowers

During the Victorian Age, the expression of physical attraction was looked down upon by the general populace, but like any suppressed thing, people found a new way to express themselves - WITH FLOWERS.

Whole dictionaries were dedicated to the hidden meaning expressed by the offering of a flower. I have only found a few in my bibliophile wonderings.

The way in which flowers were presented was as important as the flower itself.

An upright flower expressed a positive thought.

An upside-down flower defined the opposite feeling of what was normally expressed by theflower.

If the flower were inclined to the left the feeling it expressed refered to the giver.

If the flower were inclined to the right the feelings of the recipient were in question.

A flower given with the right hand meant YES!

A flower given with the left hand meant NO!
