Though I have only ever seen gypsum in rather dull shades of chalky gray-white, it has a wide range of colors. While it can be colorless, white, gray, and black, it can also appear in shades of yellow, brown, green, blue, red, and pink. In the form of a crystal, it is referred to as selenite, and as a mass, it is known as alabaster. Alabaster is the fine-grained form of gypsum, which can appear as a white stone or other delicate shades. Selenite is colorless to white and can be found in the form of the “desert rose.” The fibrous form of gypsum is the true gypsum.
Gypsum has the ability to derail stagnation, giving its user the ability to grow toward one’s ideas of improvement. It is also useful in keeping up with life’s little curve balls. This gem is considered a “lucky” stone.
Placed in the middle of a medicine wheel, gypsum helps cement the connection between the six directions – north, south, east, west, the sky, and the earth. Gypsum will also bring the members of the wheel into better unity and assist in the formulation of “right thought.” It has also been used in certain aboriginal rain making ceremonies. The gypsum is thrown into the air so that when it returns to the earth, its fibers are dispersed.
Fibrous gypsum helps with the growth of strong bones. It also enhances the elasticity of the skin and tissues. Ancient tribes used it to stimulate fertility. The heart chraka is affected.
Carved into geometric forms, alabaster is a helpful tool of meditation. It is said to “unlock the secrets of the pyramids” by taking you back mentally to the time during which they were built. It has also been used to energize other minerals. The other stones should be placed on the alabaster for this purpose.
Alabaster can help its owner be more forgiving. It enhances maturity and composure during stress, especially for those in the “service” industries. Tension from seeking information can be alleviated using this stone.
Disorders of the heart are favorably affected by alabaster. It also helps diminish internalized anger.
Selenite is so soft that dust particles in the air can be enough to mar its surface. It’s name means “moonstone” though it is not the same as moonstone. Some sources claim, selenite crystals were used by ancient magicians to record their knowledge. If a theft occurs in the presence of a selenite, they are said to record the event to be “played back” later.
Selenite assists in mental clarity and expands awareness of one’s surroundings. Like alabaster, it extends the mind towards the past, and also the future, allowing its user to accept both past and future incarnations. This is done by rubbing the stone with the pad of your thumb or finger during meditation. Selenite can also help ease shyness.
Business and acquisition of possessions are affected by Selenite. Those in the field of law may benefit from this stone, especially judges. It enhances justice and the ability to differentiate between right and wrong. Selenite also helps one see the hidden inner workings of any situation. It can be used to provide flexibility to one’s nature and, conversely, strength to one’s decisions.
Selenite can extend the life span. It assists in aligning the spinal column and corrects skeletal deformities. Moving the stone up from the base of the spine can remove energy blockages, while moving it in the opposite direction evens out the flow of energy. It promotes flexibility in the muscular system. Selenite counteracts disorders associated with the metals found in dental fillings and damage due to free radicals. It protects and regenerates the cellular membrane, helping cases of cancer and tumors as well as age spots, wrinkles, and light sensitivity.
