A Who's Who of World Mythology : Adraste

Adraste is a war goddess of ancient Britain to whom Boudicca prayed before battle. She is also called “Invincible” Andraste and possibly Andate. She is goddess of the Iceni tribe and allegedly received human sacrifices from among the enemy. It is said that Boudicca released a hare as part of her rites.

Among the Gauls she is Andarta, goddess of the Vocontii tribe, her name derived from artos “bear” or ar “plough.” Along with a goddess Artio, she was the head of a bear cult and parallel to the classical Artemis. She could assume the form of a bear if she so wished. Artio’s cult centered in Berne, Switzerland and a figurine of the goddess feeding a bear was found there. The name Berne means bear. It has been suggested that the origin of King Arthur lies in a bear cult.

It is unknown whether the Phrygian goddess Adrastea is at all related to the Celtic deity. Adrastea is a Mountain goddess known from inscriptions from 400 BC as a defender of the righteous.
