A Who's Who of World Mythology : Aegir

In the Norse pantheon, Aegir is the god of oceans though not Aesir like the other gods. He is a sea giant, son of Mistblindi, a fog in which you can't see your hand in front of your face. His other names include Eagor, Hler, "the shelterer," or Gymir, "the concealer." The river Eider was known as “Aegir’s Door” during the time of the Vikings, and his Hall is located under the waves near the Island of Hlesay in Kattegatt. He grinds the white meal of the foam with his mill and brews the foaming beer of the sea.

With his sister-wife Ran, he had nine daughters, the Waves or Unn “Billow” maidens because the waves on the sea always come nine by nine. The ninth wave "corpse sea" is always the worst.. Their names include Bylgia and/or Báva “big breaking wave,” Dufa “diveress” or “drooping,” Hefring “the lifting one” or “heaving,” Kolga “cool wave,” Gjolp “holwer,” Greip or Hrönn “grasper,” Himinglæva “the sky shines through,” Blöðughadda “with bloody hair” describing the ocean during a sea battle, and Udr “wave.” With snow-white arms and bosoms, long golden hair, deep-blue eyes, and willowy forms, they play in the waves above the realm of their father and mother in transparent blue, white, or green veils.

Aegir's two principal servants were Elde and Funfeng who symbolize the phosphorescence of the sea. They waited upon his guests, usually drowned sailors dragged to his Hall in his wife’s nets, in banquet beneath the sea.

In the Hymiskvida, Aegir entertained the gods at the autumnal equinox, but his supply of drink being too small for Thor, Tyr and Thor set out to capture the Odherir, the magic cauldron of the giants. Later in the Aegisdrekka or the Lokasenna , the Aesir have brought the cauldron to the party, but after drinking, they are insulted by Loki. These are the events which lead to Ragnarok.
