A Who's Who of World Mythology : Amergin

Amergin (Amhairghin) was the first to land on the shores of Ireland during the Milesian invasion after the murder of Ith by the three kings of the Tuatha de Danann. Ith was a Milesian, the brother to Bile and son of Bregon. His barrow, the Grugith, survives in the Cornish Parish of St Teath. Amergin was the poet and judge of his people, allowing them to land on Ireland by successfully encountering the goddesses of sovereignty Banba, Fodla, and Eriu. He promised to name the island after each of them, but only Eriu is recalled in the name. The Milesians defeated the Tuatha, many of whom retreated to underground Sidhe.
