A Who's Who of World Mythology : Anansi

In Western Africa and the East Indies, the trickster appears in the form of a spider, Anansi (Anancy or Ananse). He plays a certain role in "creation" and "saving" life, by having brought humans wisdom, fire, or even water and food from heaven during drought. He is a folk hero, and folktales are often referred to as "Anansi stories.” A collection of folktales in which he did not figure very prominently would be virtually unthinkable. At one time he was representative of the supreme deity, but the chameleon took his place. Unable to bear the disgrace, he now hides in the corners of houses.
