1 cup butter
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup white sugar
1 tsp cream of tartar
1 egg
1 tsp baking soda
2 cups flour
1 tsp vanilla
1/4 tsp salt

Directions

Cream butter, add sugars, and continue creaming until fluffy. Beat in egg and vanilla. Sift dry ingredients together on a sheet of wax paper. Add to creamed mixture. Chill 1/2 hour. Roll into balls, then press tops with fork. Dip fork into a bowl of sugar as you go, then sprinkle additional sugar on each cookie before baking. Bake at 375 degrees for 12 to 15 minutes.
