Dunhill Co.- What can be said? The name says it all…One of the most prestigious tobacco and pipe companies ever. I have yet to own one of their pipes, but a few of their blends are regulars in my smoking rotation-
Standard Mixture Medium- The tin says a "medium blend of Virginia and Turkish tobaccos fine rich flavor". It has a nice aroma and nice look in the tin. I am smoking this in a Grabow Bulldog that has really absorbed the flavor. It's a blend of brown and black tobaccos, which seem to be Virginias, Latakia and possibly a touch of Burley that comes out in the aroma. It has a great aroma, by the way, and a super taste- sort of sweet and musty also. This is one of my favorite Dunhill blends. The room aroma is that of a Latakia blend, which either seems super or terrible depending on the person's preference. Actually, non-smokers have enjoyed this blend's aroma more than aromatic smokers. It is fairly hearty, also- and not for the person who wants to switch from mild aromatics to English blends.
Royal Yacht- Cased Virginias- Not my favorite of the Dunhill line. It's an all Virginia blend, with a casing of licorice or something of that nature. When opening the tin, the smell just about knocks you out! It's an odd smell that seems to be like cheap wine. This blend burns pretty good, and has an ample (putting it mildly) amount of nicotine in it. The room aroma is hard to describe also…I really shouldn't have even written a review on this blend, because I can't ever even smoke a whole bowl of the stuff, so I'll give it an incomplete rating. Not recommended. The Aromatic smoker will find it too high in nicotine and the Virginia smoker probably won't like the casings (my problem).
Early Morning Pipe- Sweet Orientals, with bright and Red Virginias- A little bit of Turkish and Latakia add to this blend. I like it, and the name says it all. This is a decent blend to start the day off with. It's strong enough to give you a little jolt to get going in the morning, but it won't leave you "buzzing around" like Royal Yacht. I enjoy this blend with a cup of coffee and the Sunday paper about every week. It's a medium dark blend, mostly brown and black tobaccos, dry to the touch- almost too dry actually. I might need to mist this tin a little bit. It's pretty sweet in flavor, and has a nice sweet aroma coming from the bowl, uncommonly sweet actually. This blend doesn't seem to be heavy in Latakia, and the bowl I'm smoking right now is biting a tad, so it should be misted soon. The only problem I have with this blend is that it gets sort of flat at the bottom of the bowl, but it doesn't necessarily ruin the smoke. It brings out a little more of the Latakia taste when it happens, and pushes the Turkish and Virginia aside. Even though this tin was so dry, (I have a few tins laying around and picked the oldest one- about 2 years old- to write this review) the blend is extremely slow smoking. It makes you feel that in a big bowled pipe it could last for days! I've noticed that the room aroma takes a turn just the like the smoking characteristics- starts off sweet and then goes a bit flat also. Even without a high percentage of Latakia, it still puts off a lot of smoke. A really good, easily available blend for the new English smoker or the veteran.
My Mixture 965- Latakia, Macedonia Bright, Brown Cavendish- Probably the most well known and well liked blend ever…period. I was turned onto this by a buddy of mine and never left it. In fact, it's time to pick up some more. It's another mostly dark blend and the tin aroma comes off with a musty sweet smell that's really enjoyable to me. Upon lighting up, you get a good dose of Latakia, but not overpowering, and a taste that's just hard to describe. Something reminds me of a pastry in this blend also- especially sniffing the bowl and the room aroma. The aroma is one of the best I've ever smelled, and almost everyone- smokers and non-smokers, Aromatic or English fans, love it. It's not hard to exhale out the nose, and is sort of "Middle of the Road" in strength. Not too harsh at all, and your head won't swoon…Like all the Dunhill blends, it's a little dry when opening the tin, but burns superbly with almost no need for a re-light. I can't say anything negative about this blend. The perfect blend for all smokers (well, maybe that's a bit of a reach!)…
London Mixture- Latakia, Virginia, Turkish- another fine Dunhill blend. The Latakia is extremely light in this blend, and is used the way I like it- as a spice, not a main ingredient. I'll have to give this blend an incomplete, though, since I don't have anymore and never wrote anything down when I was smoking it. It was good enough for me to go through a couple
