The reason there are so many different names for the moons each month is that the Celts viewed the moons from full moon to full moon, this encompassing two months. So January is sometimes called the Cold Moon, the Storm Moon, the Quiet Moon etc & is actually all of these because although the Wolf Moon actually begins on the 30th of Dec, it is a full moon that is considered lasting until the following full moon. Likewise the Storm Moon which begins on January 28th lasts until the full moon in February. So all of these names apply. Just don't let this confuse you. These moons also have Gaelic names corresponding to trees & Goddesses/Gods. WOLF MOON (Actually begins on Dec 30th) : This is the moon of January. Also called Ice Moon, Quiet Moon, Cold Moon, Disting Moon, and Moon of Little Winter. Llianth(th ee' ahnth): Llianth is the fourth month of the year by the Ancient Celtic Calendar. Recall, if you will, that this calendar does not begin in January. The Celtic New Year begins at Samhain which is around October 31st-November 2nd. It is also known as the Poet's Moon & is a time for peace, creativity, and inspiration. The patron deity of Llianth is Brighid. Llianth is from January 1 to January 30. (Quiet Moon) January -- Storm Moon (Begins on the January 28th & extends into Feb) A storm is said to rage at this time just before this moon ends. |
The Esbats or full moons, have long been seen by The Craft as the best time for rituals and magick, although we are not bound by these rules. They are merely suggestions, just as the correspondents are suggestions. Magick can be preformed at anytime that you are ready to perform it. The Celts believed that the impact of the full moon's energy and influence was felt for three days before and three days after each full moon. Their year was divided by it's full moons into thirteen months, one for each moon occuring during the solar year. They attempted to align themselves with the energy of each full moon when possible in their spellcrafting & rituals. |
Druid's Moon: Riuros/Cold Moon Gather a white candle, freezer bag, water, and a sheet of white paper. Ask the God/Goddess for assistance with your purpose. Write down all your negative behaviours nine times on the paper. Fill the bag with enough prayer water to saturate and cover the paper. Put the bag in your freezer, say goodbye to your bad habits, and thank "She Who Is" for helping you. |
