INTERVIEWS
R) And tonight you guys are in the Forum in Melbourne
B) That's right
R) How are you all?
B) Good
C) It's really rockin' in here
J) I've got a question. We were meant to do an interview a couple of weeks ago but you were in Toronto and you got hit in the head with something, what did you get hit in the head with?
D) Ah, it was a box of something, I don't know
J) Did you open it and see what was in it?
D) No, I was holding my head
J) Oh, okay
D) It was something that was flying throught the air, I think it was meant to be a gift, but-
C) It was a UFO
R) Did they bring it all the way back from Canada?
D) I think we left it in the ground after it ricoched off my head
R) And you guys have got some amazing groupies, there's these great girls in Seattle that send pictures of you guys in their 4WD all the time
B) Do they drive a pink one?
J) Yeah
Everyone groans
C) What are their names, Missy and something?
R) Missy and Natasha or something, but their cute aren't they? We sent them the live silverchair CD and they just went off, they kept e-mailing and sending pictures, so their cute. Do they seriously follow your tour bus everywhere?
C) Yeah
R) They're that bad
B) Yeah, I definitely think they're verging on stalkers
R) Now of course you're new album Neon Ballroom is released on Monday in the shops, it's been along awaited and ah, David Helfgott plays on one of the tracks, did you actually see Shine and got inspired by the life story and just said, that's it, let's get him onto the album. How did that happen?
D) Um, that was, I was having a meeting with Larry, who wrote the piano part
R) Uhuh
D) And, um, I was just describing the kind of part that I wanted on that song and i was describing a manic kinda unsettling, dischording-
R) And the song is Emotion Sickness
D) Yeah, so he just seemed appropriate
R) It's beautiful
D) Thankyou
R) And the lyrics are amazing, for such a young dude, you've got some amazing lyrics on the albums, you always do, but these ones are quite intense and quite political
D) Thankyou, they are quite political
R) In fact, um, the Anthem for the year 2000, Justin are you asleep today?
J) I'm just letting you go
C) Earth to Justin
R) I'm going for it, the um, Anthem for the year 2000, you dreamt, ah, that came about in a dream
D) Yeah
R) Did you have the freak in the dream aswell, to cast her in the film clip?
D) Nah, she wasn't in the dream, it was just a dream that inspired the anthemic quality to the song, it didn't inspire it lyrically, or-
R) So the freak, you said she'd make a good politician for the youth to rebel against
D) Yeah
R) Excellent
J) You shot part of that at the MLC building in Sydney, how long did you block the street off for?
C) Um, it was a Sunday afternoon, there was like, ah, it started in the morning but thet did most of it in the afternoon, but, um-
J) Was that the day of the Big Day Out, or no, was it the day?
C) Yeah, it was the day of the Big Day Out
J) Oh, okay
C) Yeah
J) And where did you get all those extras from?
C) Um, we just kind of sent little, um-
R) We actually did announcements on the air for a couple of weeks
C) Yeah, and we also on the internet, and just throught the fan club and stuff to all across Australia
J) Oh, okay. It was a good video, very fun.
C) Cool
R) And the photagraphy on the inst for the album is pretty amazing, in, Daniel, you're actually inside a bottle on one of the pictures, um, stuck inside a bottle for Steam Rises.
C) And what's Ben doing?
J) Who's that?
C) What's Ben doing?
R) What are you doing Ben?
B) I'm wacking on my make-up
R) Your lipstick
B) I love lippy
R) Waht colour lipsticks that? Firey red?
B) Oh, no, I think it was purple actually or was it chilli, what were you doing Chris?
R) And Chris, are you putting the rouge on?
C) Oh, nah
B) What were you doing Chris?
C) I'm the crazy one
J) That's sort of like a pink lipstik he's got on there
R) It's mad photography on the inside, so listeners, when you do get Neon Ballroom, have a look, because ot's incredible photography
B) Can we mention what Chris is doing?
R) Yeah, and Chris is inside a, sorry, Daniel, you're inside a bottle and then we'll talk to Chris, how did they do that?
D) Um, it was a big cap perspex canister and I was just inside it kind of being sprayed with water in it
R) Oh, wow
D) And one of them siuts, it was pretty uncomfortable
R) So it was a bit steamy in the midst of summer huh?
D) Yeah, it was steamy
R) Excellent, now Chris, what were you doing in the pictures?
B) Giving-
J) Giving a gun a blow job by the looks of it
C) Yeah, I'm good at that, Ben taught me
R) And Ben's putting on some lovely lippy
J) And he's crying, why are you crying?
C) Yeah Ben
B) I was upset, like-
J) Have you seen the crying game, have you seen that movie?
B) Nup
R) No, he doesn't have a wig on in that one, now Paul Mack does a few remixes, um, on the CD, what tracks are thay, um
C) Year 2000
R) Yeah, Anthem for the year 2000, he also remixed Freak, when he did that one and Spawn Again and um, Satin Sheets, what I wanna know is, as a remixer cause he's pretty amazing, does he actually submit, like 3 songs, like as an example of what he could do and you sort of suggest from that, oh, that's the one we wanna go with. Does he do, does he retwink really differently, or, do you get where i'm coming from?
D) On the album, he didn't actuallt remix, he just, um, added kind of futuristic-
R) Oh, okay
D) Danscy, kind of sounds
R) So when the singles come out for particular tracks, he might do a few remix twinking
D) Yeah
R) Yeah, cause there's so many different ways that you could remix a track in production sort of senses
D) Yeah
R) I mean the Freak Remix was mad, I mean that just goes (makes a strange noise) like this, does he actually give you a few different examples and then you go, is that, how many does he submit?
D) Um, he basically just submits one and then we tell him if we like it or we don't
R) It's as simple as that
D) Yeah its, the thing about it, I think is, it's another persons interpretation of your song, so you can't realy tell them how to do it, but, otherwise it defeats the purpose
R) Yeah, exactly, so you just have the last tick in the box, basically
D) Yeah
R) And you've also got a regional tour planned for say, May
C) Around that time yeah, we go overseas on the 10th of Marck, go throught the states and Europe
R) North America in particular go ballistic over you
C) Mmm, it's a graet place
R) Yeah. I love North America
J) What are your favourite regional places in Australia to tour?
C) Um
D) Lightning Ridge
B) Yeah, Lightning Ridge
J) Did you go Opal hunting?
C) Nah
R) Now that's where you should do a film clip, right up the top when the lightnings going off, you could have little black capes on, sorry, my imaginations going a bit ballistic
J) Where do you get thes blody ideas from?
R) What else can we talk about? Website? The official website
B & C) Chairpage
R) www.chairpage.com
C) That's it
R) So, um, how much input on the net, on the internet site do you guys have?
B) Nothin'
R) You just say, oh, that'll do
J) Who does all that for ya?
C) Pete Walton, a guy that lives in, er, New Jersey and a few other people around the world
J) He put a Net 50 link on there last year
C) Did he?
J) Yeah
C) Oh, that's great
J) When Untitled was around
C) Excellent
R) So how long did it take to get the finished product of Neon Ballroom out and ah, into the finished product, was it more than a year?
D) Yeah, to write, it probably took 3 or 4 months and to record it took 6 weeks I think, 6 or 7 weeks and then 4 weeks to mix.
R) Do you ever write any of your lyrics sort of in quite moments of tours when you're going through a few different emotions, cause I find when I, sort of, when I tour(laughs), when I go overseas, you lose the plot just slightly because you just wanna come home sometimes.
D) Yeah
R) What can I do, I've got to read a book or write, do you write?
D) No, when we're on tour, I just basically-
R) Focus-
D) Whenever we're not, um, yeah, whenever we're not obliged to be rock and roll, I just basically sleep
R) Yeah, because it's pretty exhausting
D) Yeah
R) Excellent
J) So where's your favourite place to write lyrics?
D) Um, just at home, the lyrics for this album are written in the house I was living in by myself for a few months, so that was good. cause I was a little bit isolated
J) Have you written a song about Sweep yet?
D) Nah, i will one day, a love song
R) So, how often do you guys get back to Newy?
B) As often as we can
R) And we heard about that, um, gig, you guys did a few weeks ago, you went under another name in Newcastle
C) Yeah, the Australian tribute show
R) And you got the true fans there, I think that's bloody good
C) Mmm, it was
R) What did you call yourselves?
C) What was it?
B) The Australian silverchair show
R) The tribute to silverchair
B) That's right
R) And then heaven forbid, you were actually there
C) The good old Cambridge
J) What was the name that you used to use?
C) Uhh
J) One of the guys fron Neighbours, was it Harold or something, you used a different name
D) Um
C) Ah, we did one from Seinfeld, the George Costanza trio once
J) There was another one I heard about, it was um, you like Neighbours, was it
B & C) Toadfish Rebbechi
J) Was it Harold
R) I hate, do you guys like Neighbours, you don't
C) Oh
R) What's that guys name?
B & C) Neighbours is alright
R) What's that guys name with the long hair?
C) Yeah, Toadfi-, Toadie
R) Ew, the Toad
C) He's good
R) Toadman, do you like him?
J) See, he used to be a shiester, now he's a respected adult in Ramsay Street
C) That's right
R) Oh, I suppose
C) He's coming up in the world
] B) He's a businessman
J) Yeah
R) Yeah, I suppose he's a bit of a good con artist
C) So like
B) Nah, he used to be a con artist, but not anymore
C) Well, what's your favourite evening show like that? the Neighbours, Home and Away or-
R) I like Dharma and Greg, but that's-
D) Oh
R) Do you like that one?
B) No, Dawson's Creek is pretty good
R) I haven't seen that one, I don't watch a lot of telly, I'm boring
C) It's a matter of everyone sleeping with each other and all that
B) I thought it was funny when the 15 year old bonked the 30, the 30, how old was she, 37 or something?
C) I don't know, I've only seen it once
D) I've never even seen it
J) That's a shit show that one
R) Which one?
J & C) Dawson's Creek
B) Get out, it's awesome
J) Do you guys, one of my favoutite shows, Saturday Night Live, I know you guys played on Saturday Night Live a couple of years ago, was that fun?
] C) Yeah, it was good
J) Did you meet any of the comedians that you like?
B) We met that, I can't even remember the hosts name, what was his name?
D) I can't remember either
J) David Allen Greer wasn't it
D) Yes
B) Yeah
C) Yeah, that's him
R) And Daniel, how many rare guitars do you own now?
D) Um, I don't know, I own a lot of rare guitars, but I haven't bought one for a long time
R) Yeah
D) Cause I got sick of it, yeah
R) Cause it got up to like 20+ didn't it
D) Yeah, it's still 20+ but I stopped
R) I hope their all insured
D) Yeah, they're all insured
R) Excellent
J) They have management, they look after everything
R) Yeah, I know, You've gotta ask thes questions you know, I'm insured, everyone's insured
J) I'm not insured
R) Allright, well, we might just get you to do some drops now(Emotion Sickness starts)
B) Allright
R) If that's cool
B) Okay
R) Um, hi we're silverchair
