According to Ralph Thomas, Fred was a blacksmith in Pittsburgh before moving to Whitesville DelawareLike many of the over 2 million southern Italians who immigrated to America between 1900 and 1924, Fred probably left Italy because of crop failure and disease. He probably was illiterate and spoke no English, as more than 1/2 of these "peasant Italians" could not read or write. Fred was a blacksmith in Pittsburgh, probably joining many of his countrymen working in Pennsylvania's steel mills.
