 dest.get.to   InfoBits | Netscape-Javascript-NBCI Banner Problem?
[News] [Software] [InfoBits] [Gallery] [Links]

After moving my website to NBCI, some problems arose. After loading one or two pages, the browser (Netscape) sometimes stalls although the page-loading animation continues. Netscape may subsequently fail to load any webpages, even those unrelated to this site.

At first I thought it was due to NBCI's servers being offline, but this behavior continued over several consecutive days at various times of day even when NBCI server status page indicated they were operational. During this time, I had no trouble accessing and updating the site from home.

One day, I tried Internet Explorer (IE) instead of Netscape and lo and behold, pages loaded lickety-split without any stalling whatsoever. Yet Netscape continued to exhibit problems just a few minutes after the success with IE.

I didn't know what was going on!

Then a few days later, it occured to me to disable Java and Javascript in Netscape to see if that would work.

And it did!

After a little bit of experimenting, I found that ONLY Javascript had to be disabled which led me to theorize that the problem was due to some interaction between Netscape and the Javascript code in the NBCI banner frame when surfing from behind a firewall.

To test this theory, I mirrored (uploaded a duplicate of) my website to @Home's servers which doesn't add any banner frame. With Javascript-enabled Netscape, browsing the @Home-based site was trouble-free. Netscape continued to stall if I tried the NBCI-based site. Some testing by other visitors confirmed this behavior. I also tested other NBCI member pages with similar results: Netscape stalls; IE doesn't.

Moral of the story

If you are behind a firewall and you are using Netscape, you must* may need to disable Javascript in order to browse pages stored on NBCI servers.

* Netscape passed a recent test from a known trouble-location and stalled on another test a few days later.
