Don't forget to check the Screenshots for more information.
Text Editors and Word Processors
Rogsoft Notepad+ **FREE** Screenshots 29 kb
- replaces Windows Notepad with a much improved version
- open multiple files, open large files, associate with multiple filename extensions (txt, asc, bat, ini, diz, and so on)
- user-selectable font size and colour, toolbar buttons for larger/smaller font and fixed-width/proportional font. **Cool**
- "Select All" with Ctrl-A and "Save selection as..."
- remembers previous documents (up to 16 of them)
- works with AutoSpell. Description below.
WHY I like it: quick, simple and functional.
Cetus Software. Screenshots 18 kb
- CNotePad and CWordPad are **FREE** replacements for the Windows versions of Notepad and Wordpad respectively.
- CNotePad features an integrated spelling checker, opens multiple files, fixed-width or proportional fonts, print preview
- CWordPad features an integrated spelling checker and thesaurus with synonyms/antonyms.
WHY I like it: I mostly use Notepad+ (for its font changing buttons) but the integrated spellchecker in Cetus's products means one less item in your system tray and Startup group.
AutoSpell **FREE TRIAL**. Registered version available $
- AutoSpell is available as a 25-day evaluation version.
- Quote from the website: " Should you decide not to register AutoSpell after the evaluation period, AutoSpell's spellchecking functionality for Windows Notepad, Notepad+, Editpad, and Superpad is yours to keep free of charge. "
- dictionaries for Danish, Dutch, English (American), English (British), French, German, Italian and Spanish.
Keep your notes organized
Organize those bits and pieces of information on pieces of paper, sticky notes, little notebooks with one of these programs. Each program uses a tree structure for organizing information similar to the way your hard drive is organized and viewed in Windows Explorer. The tree can be rearranged (drag and drop) as often as you like.
Snippet **FREE** Screenshot 19 kb
- no installation, no registry keys; just unzip to a folder, create a shortcut and run it
- creates a folder called Text Files in the Snippet folder
- each branch of the tree is an individual file (plain text) inside the Text Files folder
- search is limited to a single file; you can't search the tree (i.e. all files)
WHY I like it: Simple and Foolproof. However it has limited search and inefficient storage.
Treepad **FREE**, Plus version available $
Screenshots 58 kb
- no complex installation, one registry key and file association
- all the information in the tree is stored in one file; multiple files are possible
- import and export capability - text, comma separated values, treepad, HTML
- search the entire tree, sub-tree, article and/or nodes; search displays multiple results
- automatic pasting of clipboard contents into current article (similar to pasteboard feature in NoteTab Light
- hyperlink capability for another Treepad node, external files on hard drive, email, websites, ftp location
- Plus version includes RTF support, print preview, table tools but lacks automatic paste
WHY I like it: Good feature set and automatic paste feature is GREAT!
Golden Section Notes **FREE** Screenshots 48 kb
- RTF (Rich Text Format) allows a variety of text fonts, size, colour, decoration, justification and background colour
- pictures can also be included!
- multiple language support
- print preview
Golden Section Notes has been upgraded to version 2.2 and is no longer available as freeware. Hope you downloaded the old version 1.3 when you had a chance.
WHY I like it: RTF increases visual impact at the cost of file size, but so what? Hard drives are cheap.
