Stand By Me

“Do not be afraid. Stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which He will accomplish for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall see again no more forever.” (Exodus 14:13)

The children of Israel had just left 400 years of slavery in Egypt. They fled to the desert, but they had come to a cul-de-sac at the Red Sea. An angry Pharaoh changed his mind and was sending the entire Egyptian army to recapture the wealth of Egypt that they had just carried. They cried out to their leader Moses, complaining that he had brought them that far only to die in the desert.

Learning when to move and when to stand is the greatest challenge for all of us. We are trained for action, not to sit idly and wait. We are trained to solve problems, to take matters into our own hands, to not wait for them to resolve themselves. However, God says there are times to wait, wait until He says GO. If we go before He says so, we will likely worsen our situation. Had the Israelites attempted to cross the Red Sea before it parted by the powerful east wind of God, they all would have drowned. If they had fled north to avoid the chariots of the Egyptians, God would not have moved in a miraculous way like He did.

God cannot work on our behalf if we continually try to solve our problems when He has instructed us to stand still. God will tell us many times that “I AM God, stand by Me, and see the salvation, the deliverance of the LORD from all your problems. Do not be afraid. Just stand.” Standing still is sometimes the greatest action we can do, although it is the most difficult thing to do in our spiritual walk. When the bill collectors keep on calling, the IRS keeps on liening, the banks keep on foreclosing, the wife keeps on filing, the employer keeps on shredding, the 401K keeps on depleting, and the kids keep on stoning – you’ve got to keep on standing, standing on the promises of God. Stand, and understand what the Word of God has to say about your situation, so that you can withstand. You need God, not Corey Feldman or River Phoenix, to stand by Me. Stand still when God says stand and see the deliverance of the LORD.
