Peace of Jerusalem

“Pray for the peace of Jerusalem, may they prosper who love you. Peace be within your walls, prosperity within your palaces” (Psalm 122:6-7).

There are seven reasons why Israel should keep its land and why you should pray for the peace of Jerusalem every day, the benefit of which is peace and prosperity for YOU. The first proof of Israel’s right to the land is history, as there has been an Israel up until the Roman Empire. The Romans conquered the land, but Jews were allowed to live there. The Turks took over after the Crusades and ruled until World War I. Then the land was conquered by the British. One of the British generals was Allenby, a Bible-believer who knew the significance of Jerusalem. Before attacking Jerusalem to drive out the Turks, Allenby prayed that God would let him take the city without damaging the holy places. Allenby sent biplanes over Jerusalem to do reconnaissance. The Turks had never seen an airplane and were terrified. Then they were told they were going to be opposed by Allenby the next day, which means, in their language, “prophet from God.” They dared not fight against a prophet from God, so when Allenby went to take Jerusalem, he captured it without firing a single shot. Our God is still a God of miracles.

The second reason is that Israel has the right to the land because of archeology. Every time Indiana Jones is busy raiding the Lost Ark, every dig in Israel only support the fact that Israelis have been there for 3,000 years. Third, that land belongs to Israel because of the economic value of the Israelis being there. Israel today is a modern marvel of agriculture and technology, able to bring more food out of the desert than any other country . Fourth, Israel has the land right because of humanitarian concern. Six million Jews were slaughtered and these people have a right to their homeland. Fifth, Israel ought to have their land because she is a strategic friend and ally of America. Israel is an impediment to groups hostile to democratic ideals, hostile to that which makes us the greatest Judeo-Christian nation in the history of the world. America and Israel have the same root, or shoresh, as we believe in the same Bible and the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

Sixth, Israel is a stumbling block to terrorism. The war we see on CNN is not against a nation, it is against terrorism who knows no borders. If Israel were driven into the sea, if every Jew were killed, terrorism would not stop. It is not just a matter of Israel in the Middle East, it is the heart of the people who are supporting terror. Should they be successful in overrunning Israel, it would still not be enough. But that won’t happen as God watches over Israel as the apple of His eye. Finally, we ought to support Israel because it has a right to the land. Because God said so. In Genesis 13:14-15, God told Abram, “Lift your eyes now and look from the place where you are- northward, southward, eastward and westward; for all the land which you see, I give to you and your descendants forever.” Israel is the only nation to have received a divine land grant from God Himself.

The foregoing reasons clearly establish that Israel has a right to the land. In July 2000, Ehud Barak offered incredible concessions to Arafat, giving him most of the West Bank. There were parts he did not want to give, but in exchange he would give land in Israel proper. He also did the unthinkable, dividing Jerusalem and allowing the PLO to have their capital. Arafat said NO and two months later, the riots began when Ariel Sharon went to the Temple Mount after he secured permission from the Islamic authorities. The Arab response was calculated for they would spin this as an attack upon the holy mosque and use it as an excuse to launch Intifada 2. Israel did give peace a chance, but now the Israelis have come to see that, “No matter what we do, the Arabs do not want to deal with us. They want to destroy us.” We have to get out of this mindset that somehow you can buy peace in the Middle East by giving land that is rightfully yours to begin with. It has not worked before and it will never work again for it is God’s will that Jerusalem, and Israel as a nation, be WHOLE or full of shalom.

Heavenly Father, I pray for the peace – the shalom, the wholeness, nothing missing, nothing broken – of Jerusalem. I thank you for giving me peace and prosperity as I pray for my Band of Brothers in Jerusalem. In the name of Jesus, the Prince of Peace. Sha’alu Shalom Yerushalayim. Amen!
