The Old Man and The Sea

“Lift up your rod, and stretch out your hand over the sea, and divide it. And the children of Israel shall go on dry ground through the midst of the sea.” (Exodus 14:16)

If you spend much time with God, it won’t be long before you’ll start doing things the world considers supernatural. You’ll start giving and sowing and then just wait for harvest time. You’ll be laying hands on the sick and have them recover. You’ll be praying in tongues and even your mother won’t understand. You’ll start wanting to cast out demons and tread on serpents and scorpions. You’ll be casting the whole mountain of your problems into the sea and they just disappear. You’ll be so Supernatural that Carlos Santana will ask you to write all his songs.

How can you do it? Not by trying to do things on your own, but by obeying God, by doing the things He’s already given you power to do. That’s what happened with Moses. He was an 80 year old man and didn’t have any power to divide the Red Sea. But he did have the power to stretch his rod out over it. And when he did that in obedience to God’s command, the Holy Spirit caused the east wind to part the sea. This is God’s story of The Old Man and The Sea that Ernest Hemingway couldn’t possibly imagine. Once again, truth, especially the truth of the Word of God, is indeed stranger than fiction.
