Darkman

“So the people stood afar off, but Moses drew near the thick darkness where God was.” (Exodus 20:21)

After giving the Ten Commandments at mount Sinai, Moses the first Darkman was approaching the darkness where God was. We too are called to the mountain of God like Moses, but few of us are willing to go through the darkness to get there. God wanted to reveal His shekinah glory to the children of Israel, but they were afraid to enter into His presence. They only wanted to superficially know about God, rather than really know him intimately like Moses did after 40 Days and 40 Nights, and this grieved the heart of a loving God.

Why wouldn’t they risk entering the dark to become the Darkman hero if it meant being in the presence and the glory of God? May be they had fears like each of us and The Sum of All Fears for them is not a small number. The fear of the unknown, of what might happen. The fear that a holy God might not like what He sees or perhaps the fear of darkness itself and What Lies Beneath that darkness may not be as pretty as Michelle Pfeiffer.

Many of us are satisfied to only casually hear about God from preachers, rabbis and priests. But there is a greater calling, an intimate calling for each of us to enter into The Deep of His presence without Nick Nolte. We may enter through The Doors that even Jim Morrison wouldn’t want to go through. We need, however, not fear God’s presence even if it means entering the dark. We must believe that our God is a God of love and compassion. If God calls us into the dark in order to enter His presence, then that darkness will elevate us to new levels of relationship with a God of light who longs – After Dark, My Sweet – to fellowship with us.
