The Object of Your Affection“If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind [affection] on things above, not on things on the earth.” (Colossians 3:1-2) Many of us have learned to believe God to prosper us to such an extent that we spend too much time and energy taking care of the material things of life – like a bigger house, a younger car, a better job, a less volatile investment portfolio – that we unconsciously give the affection of our heart over to this natural world instead of to God. As the Bible says, The Object of Our Affection should be on things above where God is and His riches and glory, not things on earth or Jennifer Aniston. When I first started living by faith, I was in desperate circumstances so it was easy for me to dedicate myself to prayer and to the Word. As I honored and obeyed God’s Word through tithes, offerings, giving, and meditating on His Word daily, He honored and prospered me. I was so blessed that I started to bless others with my time, talent and treasure, but then came the real test of my faith. Would I serve God out of love for Him instead of my desperation? You know what, it takes a whole lot more dedication to serve God when you’re doing well than when you’re desperate because there’s a fat cat temptation to be possessed by material things that choke your desire for the spiritual things of God. As the material blessings of God come your way, remember God has not prospered you so you can consume it on your own selfish lusts for yourself and by yourself. God has revealed His Word so you can walk in the Spirit and do what He has called you to do, which is to do good works, help the needy, be a witness of God’s glory with His blessings and finance the spreading of the gospel so the lost will get saved. Do not let the things of this world cause you to miss out on the glorious things of God. Get your priorities in line with God’s Word, look up, set The Object of Your Affection on things above where God is, and you’ll discover just how rich and wonderful the God kind of life can be.
