The Rock

“Then Moses lifted his hand and struck the rock twice with his rod; and water came out abundantly.” (Numbers 20:11)

The children of Israel were complaining once again that they did not have water to drink. Moses inquired of God and God said, “Speak to the rock before their eyes, and it will yield its water.” Moses, in his frustration and anger, made a strategic mistake. Instead of speaking to the rock, Moses disobeyed God and struck the rock not once, but twice, with his rod to force the water out. God was calling Moses to a higher level where he was to use his words to speak the miracle. However, Moses not only lost his temper, he also took credit for the miracle as if he did it and dishonored God. Moses used his rod, the symbol of his life as a shepherd, to force the provision of water and God did not get the glory that He deserves.

When we disobey God, we use our skills and abilities to force what we believe should happen. We take control, but when we do, we will be denied passage to the Promised Land of blessing from God. Moses failed at the goal line, and it prevented him from entering the Promised Land, from finishing a glorious life of service for God. The hardest place to score a touchdown is from the goal line, for there is something about crossing over into the endzone that makes those last few yards the most difficult, that makes it The Longest Yard even with Burt Reynolds. Living a spiritual life requires patience and obedience to God’s Word. You may not be near Alcatraz or watch much wrestling or the Scorpion King, but you should be aware of lesson from The Rock. Beware of anger and doing things in your own strength, for God wants to bring you into the Promised Land of His blessing and that requires walking in complete obedience to Him, no matter the cost.
