Ordinary People

“I was no prophet, nor was I a son of a prophet. But I was a sheepbreeder and a tender of sycamore fruit. Then the LORD took me as I followed the flock, and the LORD said to me ‘Go, prophesy to my people Israel’ ” (Amos 7:14-15).

Amos obeyed the call of God to prophesy and as a result, God used him to impact generations. Likewise, God selected David from the people to be king. Even Jesse, his own father, did not see his value. When the prophet Samuel asked Jesse to bring him his sons, this father left David out. Only after Samuel asked, “Are these all the sons you have?” did Jesse tell him about David the youngest who was taking care of the sheep. After Samuel anointed David, his brother Eliab opposed him. When David asked about Goliath, Eliab put David down in front of others (1 Samuel 17:28).

The Midianites were so cruel that the Israelites fled to the mountains and God chose Gideon to be the deliverer of His people. When God wanted to use him, Gideon saw himself as: “How can I save Israel? Indeed my clan is the weakest in Manasseh and I am the least in my father’s house” (Judges 6:15). Yet God told him, “The LORD is with you, you mighty man of valor!” (Judges 6:12). No matter how lowly Gideon felt, God used Gideon to be one of His heroes. Jesus could have picked the most educated, gifted, and articulate people to help Him evangelize the world. Instead, He chose uneducated, simple men like Peter and John (Acts 4:13). Jesus could have been wealthy or famous, yet He chose to become the son of a carpenter who worked with his hands.

God is an expert at using Ordinary People for His purpose and glory. Ordinary People like Donald Sutherland, Timothy Hutton, and Mary Tyler Moore. People in The Natural like Robert Redford, people just like us. We don’t have to be famous or even Almost Famous like Kate Hudson or some rock star. With God’s Super imposed on our Natural, we can do Supernatural exploits for His kingdom, and we can do it all without Santana.
