Breathless“And [Delilah] said ‘The Philistines are upon you Samson!’ So he awoke from his sleep and said ‘I will go out as before, at other times, and shake myself free!’ But he did not know that the LORD had departed from him” (Judges 16:20). Poor Samson, the Holy Spirit always announces His presence when He comes in, but never when He leaves. Do you know if the Holy Spirit is present in your life? And do you know what to do to maintain His presence? Peter says, “Make your calling and election sure” (2 Peter 1:10). It doesn’t matter how busy you are, if you neglect time with God, you will suffer and so will your family, your marriage, your health, job or business. Prayerlessness, fatigue, slothfulness and ignoring the Word of God can cause the Holy Spirit to depart. We must seek God through meditation on the Word and prayer. Although prayer and meditation is essential, we need to be filled with the Holy Spirit every day. Some believers base their spiritual lives on a memorable moment or experience with God from the past. But that is not enough as Samson found out belatedly. When satan tempted Jesus and said, “If you are the Son of God, turn this rock into bread,” Jesus told him, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone’”. Only the Word of God can defeat satan. Even your greatest victories and most memorable moments with God from yesterday cannot defeat the demons of hell against you. Only the Word of God, empowered by the Holy Spirit, the Ruach Ha’Kodesh, or the very breath of God, can save your soul.
