Father Knows Best

“If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom a father does not chasten?” (Hebrews 12:7)

Contrary to what you may believe, a loving God doesn’t send death, sickness, oppression, accidents and destruction on His children to chastise them. According to 2 Timothy 3:16-17, He does it as a caring Father with His Word for “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work”.

The Apostle Paul disciplined the wayward Corinthian church (2 Corinthians 7) not by asking God to send a Twister without Helen Hunt to blow them away, but by writing them a word of reproof that Hurts So Good they would have preferred to be struck by lightning, twice. The Word of God as inspired by the Holy Spirit and penned by Paul cut so deeply into their spirits that it brought them to repentance.

God your heavenly Father loves you a whole lot more than Robert Young on that 50s sitcom Father Knows Best. God also knows infinitely more about you than your earthly father. In fact, God Knows What You Did Last Summer and because He does, He will chasten you. He'll use the spiritual power in His Word to chasten lusts, unbelief and purify your spirit so that you’ll come out strong, renewed and powerful, not dazed and confused, weak and condemned. So quit using disappointments and disasters to have a pity party and start putting yourself under the Word of God and let it correct you and circumcise the flesh and cut loose the lusts that put you on the Road to Perdition with Tom Hanks. The Word of God is the sword of the Spirit (Ephesians 6:17) and it is sharper than a double-edged sword (Hebrews 4:12).

One edge is to fight the devil and his crew. The other edge, the leading edge, is to pierce to the division of your soul and spirit, to discern the thoughts and intents of your heart, to give you a good trimming and a good slicing from time to time.
