Power of Love

“But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you,” (Matthew 5:44)

Do good to those who hate you, love your enemies, turn the other cheek, bless those who curse you, pray for those who persecute you — that goes totally against your Basic Instinct because it doesn’t make you look good in front of Sharon Stone. But, the truth is, it’s the most powerful way there is because that’s the way Jesus did it, and His way never fails. When Jesus went to Nazareth and the religious leaders were Mad About Him and wanted to give Him free flying lessons off a cliff, He didn’t think about Helen Hunt. He walked right past them in the first Cliffhanger ever and no one could touch Him, not even Sylvester Stallone. Another time they couldn’t get any Satisfaction and tried to pick up some Rolling Stones to hit Him, He just walked away and no one could lay a finger on Him.

When Jesus walked through that angry mob, He wasn’t scared like Scooby Doo because He wasn’t Married To The Mob like Michelle Pfeiffer. He knew they couldn’t hurt Him because He was walking in the love of God. When Jesus said to turn the other cheek, He didn’t mean for you to get beaten up by John Travolta and Samuel Jackson into Pulp Fiction. He meant for you to stand there in love and in faith believing that the protecting power of God within that love would keep you safe and sound. He meant for you to say Just Shoot Me and no bullets will be able to reach you. In the early 1970s, a deranged, demon-possessed lunatic walked into pastor John Hagee’s church service in San Antonio, Texas and shot at him At Close Range six times but the angels of God deflected all the bullets because pastor Hagee stood in love and in faith and said “I am a man of God, and no weapon formed against me will prosper.” (Isaiah 54:17)

The Bible in Romans 5:5 tells us that the love of God has been shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit. All we have to do is walk in the love of God and obey His Word rather than our fickle feelings. Don’t be afraid to love for love never fails! Huey Lewis and The News actually had some good news for us when they recorded that song “Power of Love.” With the love of God on your side, you don’t have to be afraid of anything anymore. If you’re walking in the love of God, you’re not just livin’ La Vida Loca like Ricky Martin, you’re living the most powerful kind of life there is.
