Legends of the Fall

“Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.” (Proverbs 16:18)

One of the Divine Secrets of staying in the will of God that you’ll never get from the Ya Ya Sisterhood is not to overestimate yourself. The Bible says God resists the proud, but He gives grace to the humble. (1 Peter 5:5) The Bible’s version of Pride and Prejudice that you won’t get from Jane Austin is don’t put yourself in a position of pride where God has to resist you with extreme prejudice. Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought to think, but think of your abilities soberly according to Romans 12:3. Adopt an attitude of humility, watch yourself, and when you catch yourself getting puffed up with your own greatness like Puff Daddy, repent and remember that every good thing you enjoy and every success you’ve had has come by the grace of God and by His power, and without God you’re just a Bo Diddly.

Try not to be one of the Legends of the Fall like Brad Pitt and Anthony Hopkins. Look back on your life and see how many times you could have lost much more than That Lovin’ Feeling. Take inventory and see when you were making every mistake imaginable, God’s tender mercy pulled you up by your bootstraps. Don’t become a legend in your own mind, or even in your own shower. Put all of your pride and ego like Tom Hanks into The Bonfire of the Vanities and say Burn, Baby, Burn. Humble yourself beneath the powerful hand of God, let Him do the exalting and the promoting in His sweet time, and you will be a legend that God made without having to go through some very painful falls.
