The Lion King

“Now the king was exceedingly glad for him, and commanded that they should take Daniel up out of the [lions’] den. So Daniel was taken up out of the den, and no injury whatever was found on him, because he believed in his God.” (Daniel 6:23)

Long before Simba, Mufasa or Disney ever existed, Daniel was indeed the world’s first Lion King. Many of us know about Daniel in the lions’ den, but don’t realize that he was thrown into the den not because of his disobeying King Darius’ decree, but because he was highly favored above all the other governors and satraps. Daniel was preferred above the others in the entire kingdom of Babylon because of the spirit of excellence that was in him. God placed that excellent spirit because of Daniel’s times of prayer three times daily, worship and relationship with Him. Because of Daniel’s devotion, what he was doing in private with God were being rewarded openly. As we obey God, live by faith and do the Word, God will pour His favor upon us. Whatever we ask according to His will in Jesus’ Name, God will do it and others will see that God’s mighty hand is on us.

The favor of God brings blessings, increase and promotion, but also jealousy and envy. The others that Daniel was to rule over were so jealous of Darius’ plans for Daniel to become ruler of Babylon that they just couldn’t wait to kill him. The plan to destroy Daniel was to have Darius sign a decree to kill anyone for 30 days from praying to any god or man and prayers could only be directed to the king. Daniel went to his room, opened his window toward Jerusalem and prayed anyway. He was found praying and Darius was forced to throw him into the lions. God, however, had His angel shut the mouths of the lions. When God’s favor is on us, He will protect us from Dr Evil and Mini Me, from being the lions’ Happy Meal, and from burning up in the fiery furnace. God will even cause our enemies to be destroyed before us. When Darius found Daniel alive, he commanded those wicked men, their wives and children to be fed to the lions. We all can be The Lion King and walk in the favor of God if we follow Daniel and spend time with God in the Word and in prayer.
