Carnal Knowledge

“Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” (Matthew 26:41)

After seeing the Jack Nicholson movie Carnal Knowledge, we all should be frustrated with the weaknesses of our flesh. Many of us have resolved never to indulge a particular sin, yet when the temptation came, we fell right back into it like Al Pacino in Godfather 3. There is, however, something we can do to keep from falling to The Temptations of the flesh. We can do what the Bible says and just watch and pray. That's what Jesus told his disciples to do in the Garden of Gethsemane for He knew they were about to be tempted, and He knew that their weak flesh would overcome them if they didn't strengthen their spirits through prayer. Further, Jude 20 tells us to build ourselves up on our most holy faith by praying in the Holy Spirit. God knows that even though our born again spirits are seeking after Him and wants to obey His Word, our unregenerated flesh just can't say no to sin.

That's why God has given us the ability to pray in other tongues, to strengthen our spirit and build it up until it reigns supreme over our flesh. As we pray in the Holy Spirit, Romans 8:26 tells us that the Holy Spirit comes to help us in our weakness for we do not know what prayer to present to God as we ought to, but the Spirit Himself goes to meet our needs and pleads on our behalf. So whenever your Carnal Knowledge tells you that you are having fits of carnality, stop dreaming about Candice Bergen or Art Garfunkel. Instead follow Ephesians 6:18 and pray always with all prayer and supplication in the Holy Spirit. Don't make the mistake that Peter made when he denied Jesus not just once, but three times because of the weakness of his flesh. The next time temptation comes, be prepared, watch and pray, build yourself up on your most holy faith by praying in the Holy Spirit so your human spirit will be strong enough to subdue it.
