A River Runs Through It

“Blessed is the man.. [whose] delight is in the law of the LORD [the Word of God], and in His law he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season, whose leaf also shall not wither; and whatever he does shall prosper.” (Psalm 1:1-3)

God used a tree to illustrate the reward of obedience to His Word because it does nothing but obey God. The tree grows to declare God's glory, according to His Will, and produces exactly the kind of fruits, flowers, branches and leaves God has ordained it to produce. The tree is fruitful, flowering, strong, majestic and beautiful, fulfilling its purpose in life. The tree never resists but yields, bends, and moves according to the will of God. It stands against the elements, weather all the storms of life, smiles all day and lifts its leafy branches to praise the LORD! The tree brings forth its fruit only in its season, so if we have been sowing good seeds, it will only be a matter of when, not if, we will reap the fruits of our labors. When the tree is watered constantly because A River Runs
Through It, its leaves will not wither because of time spent drinking the water of the Word. When we become treelike and live by the Word of God, whatever we do will have no choice but to prosper.

We are to be growing like the trees, not Brad Pitt, and A River of the Word of God should be running through our lives. Like the trees, we are to be planted in the ground by the rivers of water, deeply rooted and nourished with the water of God's Word and fertilized with the Blood of Jesus. The precious Blood is like the ground in which we grow and on which we stand and depend and without which we cannot live the abundant God kind of life that Jesus purchased for us at the cross. We are to be strong and true like the trees growing for the glory of God and we are to produce fruits which are to bless others and not ourselves. The fruits also contain the seeds for the next generation of trees to grow. A tree is known by its fruit, so we are to be fruitful and multiply, be obedient to
the Word of God and performing the mission for which God has ordained us. We are to grow and bear much fruit for the glory of God and to be a channel of blessing to others (John 15:8). Then, and only then, will we prosper in whatever we do.
