One Hour Photo

“But when I looked for good, evil came to me; and when I waited for light, then came darkness” (Job 30:26).

The tough events in our lives serve to bring us to the end of ourselves so that we may discover the treasure of darkness. When we are taken into the dark times, we begin to see the light, the provision and grace of God that we never knew existed. Our sensitivities become heightened to His Word and our ability to see through spiritual eyes is illuminated. Unless we are taken into these times, our minds will not be renewed, our souls will not prosper and our salvation will not be perfected. We do not gain wisdom, only knowledge. Knowledge is gained through understanding and wisdom is gained only through the experience of darkness illumined by the light of the Word of God. After these dark periods, we discover that God was, in fact, with us the entire time just like He was the fourth man in the furnace with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. It may not feel that God is there but rest assured that He is there walking with us for He is the author, developer and finisher of our faith.

It is in the darkroom of life that God the Master Photographer, not the creepy Robin Williams, develops our negatives into beautiful pictures in about an hour. And in the words of Winston Churchill, this will be our finest hour, when God will turn our water into wine, our seeds into harvest, our scars into stars, our pain into gain, our test into a testimony, and our trial into triumph. God has told us in His Word that He will never leave us nor forsake us. It may not feel like God is there because He does not rescue us from our circumstances. God does this for our benefit in order that there will be less of SELF and more of Him, so that we might become more like Him for we are made in His image and likeness. Even Jesus learned obedience from the things He suffered (Hebrews 5:8). How much more will mere mortals like us will have to go through to build faith and learn obedience? Embrace the dark times, drop off the negatives, come back one hour later and gain the wisdom that God intends for us from these times. Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.
