One Day at a Time

“So they gathered [manna] every morning, every man according to his need. And when the sun became hot, it melted.” (Exodus 16:21)

When God delivered the children of Israel from Egypt through the desert, they could not provide for themselves. They could not sow so they could not reap. It was a place of utter desolation where nothing but total dependence on God the provider was the norm. God gave them manna from heaven, but like Valerie Bertinelli only One Day At A Time, except for the sixth day when they gathered twice as much for the Sabbath. The manna was designed to stink and breed worms the next day, so they could not save it. They couldn’t go on Ebay and sell the extra manna they hoarded for profit the following weeks and months. The lesson to be learned here is when God takes us to the desert, there is nothing we can do until God says it is over, so we must not strive against Jehovah Jireh our provider in the desert times of our lives.

God will give us our daily bread as we spend time in His Word and eat of the Bread of Life. The purpose of the desert was to keep the children of Israel from using their abilities so they could claim credit for what they did. It was a divinely appointed season to build trust and dependence on God. They had relied on the food of Egypt for 400 years and God needed to change their looking back to Egypt as their provider to looking forward to God as their source. The manna was to be only for a season. But what should have taken only 11 days to cross took 40 years of wandering in the desert because of the hardness of their hearts. They failed the test God gave them for they complained all the time. If God has taken us to the desert and He is forcing us to depend entirely on Him, then we should stay on the Word and pray that we'll learn the valuable lessons of the desert. God will bring us out when He has accomplished what He wants in us. The desert is only for a season and we can get out of it much sooner if we are careful not to murmur and complain like the children of Israel.
