The Sheltering Sky

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, even though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea.” (Psalm 46:1-2)

No matter what is happening in your life in times like these, there is one place you can find shelter or seek refuge and that is to dwell in the shadow of the Most High God. God will grant refuge to all political, economic and other refugees. Unlike the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, God has plenty of asylums, an abundance of leniency, no repatriation to the old country, and no hidden agendas. In Psalm 28 David writes, “The LORD is their strength, and He is the saving refuge of His anointed.” David trusted God and in Psalm 31 he says God is “my rock and my fortress...lead me and guide me.... but I trust in the LORD.” Again in Psalm 56 David writes, “Whenever I am afraid, I will trust in You.... In God I have put my trust; I will not fear. What can flesh do to me?” David further describes God as my Rock, my lovingkindness, my fortress, my high tower, my deliverer, my shield and the One in whom I take refuge in Psalm 144.

There may be times in your life when fear will try to overtake you, but the Bible in 2 Timothy 1:7 says, “God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” As you pray, meditate on and speak the Word of God, the spirit of fear will be removed from your life. God gives us the spirit of faith to believe in Him, a sound mind to think thoughts that are based on His Word, and a spirit of love that casts out fear to walk in His peace and righteousness. You will not find shelter or refuge from the trials and tribulations of life by watching The Sheltering Sky, but you can find shelter in the God who created the sky. In God there is safety, and in Him there is deliverance, power, comfort, and protection. The world may come crashing down any day now and be changed forever, but God and His Word remain the same. God is the same yesterday, today, and forever, and you can put your trust in Him, just as David and the psalmist did.
