There’s Something About Mary

“And [Martha] had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’s feet and heard His word.” (Luke 10:39)

Many of us have seen the romantic comedy with Cameron Diaz and Ben Stiller called There’s Something About Mary. God, however, has a much better version in Luke 10. Mary was sitting at the feet of Jesus listening to every Word of His teaching while her sister Martha was busy alone cooking dinner in the kitchen. Martha finally couldn’t stand it, she angrily came to Jesus and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me.” Jesus replied, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.” Mary had dropped everything so she could hear the Word by spending time at the feet of Jesus. But Martha had allowed the seemingly important act of cooking take priority over the Word of God. Martha, though she meant well, had chosen death, not life for the Bible says “to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.” (Romans 8:6).

If you were to choose between life and death, would you naturally choose life? The Bible says death is being carnally minded, being entangled in the affairs of this world, chasing money, women, pleasure, glory and power. Conversely, the Bible also says that life equals the Word. “Give attention to my words, incline your ears to my sayings... for they are life to those who find them, and health to all their flesh.” (Proverbs 4:20-22) To be controlled by the flesh, to be worldly-minded is death, but to be Word-minded or live in obedience to God’s Word is life for there is life, the abundant God kind of life, in the Word. Martha probably thought if she didn’t cook dinner, they’d all go hungry. But Jesus had supernaturally fed thousands and He could have done it again. Martha could have sat down at Jesus’ feet to enjoy the Word, and they all could have had dinner at God’s expense. Don’t make the common, carnal mistake of Martha. Don’t be so entangled in the web of life that you unknowingly choose death by default. Seek God FIRST and His kingdom of righteousness, put the Word of God first place in your life for there is life in the Word, and the things of life that you seek will be added unto you. (Matthew 6:33)
