Double of Nothing“And so it was, when they had crossed over, that Elijah said to Elisha, ‘Ask! What may I do for you, before I am taken away from you?’ Elisha said, ‘Please let a double portion of your spirit be upon me.’” (2 Kings 2:9) In order to possess greater power and authority from God, we must hunger for it, we must go for Double Or Nothing like Bing Crosby in the 1937 movie. Elisha hungered for God after seeing many miracles as Elijah’s servant, but he wanted more, he wanted a double portion of Elijah’s spirit. When he asked for this, Elijah replied, “You have asked a hard thing,” because Elijah knew that with great anointing came great responsibility and hardship. Just like the suffering precedes the glory and the agony before the ecstasy, humility comes before honor. Servanthood and loyalty was the preparation of Elisha, as it has been the preparation of many men of God in the Bible. Joshua was Moses’ servant, Jacob served his crooked uncle Laban for 20 years, Joseph served Pharaoh as the Prince of Egypt and David the fugitive servant of Saul. Elisha was faithful to Elijah and committed totally to his calling. When Elisha was called by Elijah, the younger man left his farm and never looked back. He slaughtered a yoke of oxen, boiled their flesh using the oxen’s equipment, and had a great party for the people. It was all or nothing so that he would eventually get Double or Nothing. Just like the Spanish Conquistador Cortez when he burned all his ships upon reaching the shores of Mexico, Elisha couldn’t fall back on his farm if his adventure with Elijah didn’t pan out. This demonstrates Elisha’s pioneering spirit in stepping out like Abraham, not knowing where he was going. If you want greater anointing from God, “you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart. I will be found by you, says the LORD, and I will bring you back from your captivity” (Jeremiah 29:13-14). Go for the double in God’s anointing and His presence in your life today.
