Then [Delilah] lured [Samson] to sleep on her knees, and called for a man and had him shave off the seven locks of his head. Then she began to torment him, and his strength left him.” (Judges 16:19).

Ice Cube may have ensembled a nice cast for Barbershop, but we as believers must be careful about who gets to cut our hair. Samson learned this lesson the hard way. The seven locks on Samson’s head showed his dedication and Nazirite vow unto God. “For behold, you shall conceive and bear a son. And no razor shall come upon his head, for the child shall be a Nazirite to God from the womb; and he shall begin to deliver Israel out of the hand of the Philistines.” (Judges 13:5).

The seven locks of Samson’s hair signify the seven blessings given to Abraham, the seven manifestations of the Holy Spirit in Isaiah 11 and the seven overcoming blessings given to the seven churches of Revelation. Samson lost his strength while he was sleeping, and our spiritual sleep will give room to the devil, separate us from God and make us lose the blessings. The Bible reminds us to “Awake to righteousness, and do not sin; for some do not have the knowledge of God. I speak this to your shame.” (1 Corinthians 15:34). “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour:” (1 Peter 5:8).

When Samson recalled everything, repented and cried to God, the LORD avenged him of his blindness and gave back his strength. “Then Samson called to the LORD, saying,
‘O Lord GOD, remember me, I pray! Strengthen me, I pray, just this once, O God, that I may be with one blow take vengeance on the Philistines for my two eyes!’ And Samson took hold of the two middle pillars which supported the temple, and he braced himself against them, one on his right and the other on his left. Then Samson said, ‘Let me die with the Philistines!’ And he pushed with all his might; and the temple fell on the lords and all the people who were in it. So the dead that he killed at his death were more than he had killed in his life.” (Judges 16:28-30).

Samson was called to be a judge to deliver Israel from the hands of Philistines, and he succeeded only at his death. If we remain steadfast in the Word of God we will never lose the strength of God like Samson did. We must not be like Sandra Bullock in While You Were Sleeping but instead maintain our faith and patience “Until the Spirit be poured upon us from on high, and the wilderness becomes a fruitful field, and the fruitful field is counted as a forest.” (Isaiah 32:15).
