Barbarians
At The Gate
Now there
were four leprous men at the entrance of the gate; and they
said to one another, 'Why are we sitting here until we die?' (2
Kings
7:3)
In the 1990s there
was a book and TV movie starring James Gardner called
Barbarians At The Gate about the $25 billion takeover of tobacco and
food
giant RJR Nabisco, the largest leveraged buyout in Wall Street. Although
it was a story of corporate greed and excess of the 1980s, the Bible
has a
similar story but about faith and deliverance. In the book of 2 Kings
chapters 6 and 7, God delivered an entire city from the enemy because
of
the faith of four very unlikely people. When the armies of Syria cut
off
the city of Samaria, its people were caught between an enemy army and
a
terrible famine. Many people were starving to death and the situation
was
desperate to put it mildly. The men God used to deliver the city were
the
four lepers who sat at the gates of the city. These unsung heroes were
treated like barbarians because they were lepers and faced certain death
from leprosy, starvation, or from the hands of the Syrian army.
When they realized
just how dire their straits were, they told each other,
"Why are we sitting here until we die?" They got up and started
on a march
of faith, not the March of Dimes, toward the enemy camp. The lepers
had
come to the place where they had to do something strictly by faith.
They
didn't talk about their situation as it looked in the natural. Instead,
they spoke words of faith and victory. And as they marched toward the
Syrian camp, God caused the Syrians to hear the noise of chariots and
the
hoofbeats of horses like the noise of a mighty invasion. The Syrians
were
so terrified that they abandoned their camp and left everything behind,
including enough food to feed the entire city of Samaria. God delivered
the entire city from the Syrians because four lepers spoke words of
faith
over their situation instead of words of fear, doubt and defeat. Then
they
put action to their faith and made a faith march. The lesson to be learned
here is when we speak the Word of God and refuse to speak negative words
in our seemingly hopeless situations, God too will deliver us.
